Internet marketing is currently the fastest way to advertise products or services, win customers, and eventually grow a business. It expands the limited scope of traditional marketing techniques using posters, newspaper ads, and billboards. Lead generation is one of the most effective internet marketing techniques utilized in various industries. This technique aims at generating prospective inquiry or interest on the products or services a business offers. A lead refers to the personal information of potential customers, such as name, address, e-mail, and phone number. The lead generator collects and stores these pieces of information submitted by the end-users on the Internet and uses it for either advertising or retailing.

The two types of lead are sales lead and marketing lead. Sales leads are generated based on demographic criteria, which makes resale to multiple advertisers possible, while marketing leads are brand-specific and may be used only once by an end-user. A lead can be clearly defined as a type of online form internet users who are interested in products or services being offered can fill out either to directly purchase the product or to receive regular advertisements.

Lead generation adopts any of three main pricing models: cost per thousand, cost per click, and cost per action. Cost per thousand models base their computation of charges on the number of views on a particular lead page. It is less efficient compared with cost per click since the advertiser is obliged to pay even if the viewer did not even click or view the lead. Cost per action pricing models resolve issues of fraud and inefficiency of the first two models.

In generating lead, the generator places copies of the online form on strategic places on the Internet. Internet users who find the product interesting can fill out the form with basic information such as name, contact number, and address. The sales team of advertisers like general contractors will use information in the contractors leads to contact the internet users and promote the product or services to them.

On the other hand, a lead may also serve as online order form. After filling out the form, the customer will be lead to another page that will assist the payment process to complete the product order.
