The Likes and Dislikes of Children
It’s a difficult task to understand a child likes and dislikes whether it’s about clothes, food, school or their activities. What does your child’s like? Do you know as a parent, what their favorite game, food or toys are? What their likes and dislikes are? Preferences are given to important insights into our personalities. Children that express their tastes and choices are easy to make out but children that don’t express themselves and are closed are difficult to make out in terms of what they like and what they dislike.
Children that always express strong preferences and want to fulfill their wants show a low limit of patience. How long can any parent listen to their child’s tantrum, “I don’t like this. “This is yucky”. “I won’t eat that. ““I won’t take a bath!” How do we deal with tantrums, especially with children throwing objects, yelling or saying “I hate you!?”Parents who love their child the most face the most painful part of time when they have to listen to their child of three, four, for five-year-old yell “I hate you”. The majority of the parents of wouldn’t have the heart to ever tell their, “I hate you even in the worst of times”. When children speak out such statements like “I hate you!” they often want to express their strong dislike towards it.
Children perceive that parents have the power to change the situation or environment and direct their frustration at you. Hate is an extreme form of dislike. Love is on the far continuum of like.
Strong emotions such as Like/dislike, Love/hate express the degrees of preference. I like pasta. I hate fish. Emotionally, the opposite of love is not hate. The opposite of love is fear, fear of losing the love and fear of not being loved by anyone. When children say “I hate you!” they are actually expressing either a dislike or fear regarding that particular thing.
We have to step back and to look at the situation to understand the child’s hidden meaning and remember that the statement is about the child’s preferences or fears. A child would often say he hated his dad just when he was getting ready for a business trip. These tantrums always occurred a day after father left on a business trip. Kid’s fear separation from their dad it’s the hidden reason in the “I hate you!” statement. You should love your child no matter what the situation is like because it is a weapon which makes everybody blind. You can also laugh to release the tension and to restore normalcy. Children often give the hint about their interests through their choices in play.
Therfore by observing them you can find lots about their likes or interest. Be aware of what makes your child’s happy and their likes and dislikes. Acknowledge those preferences to make your child feel loved and connected. With the proper guidance, your child will learn to express preferences in an appropriate and kind manner. Strengthen the relationship between you and your child by being aware of those likes and dislikes.
