Gas Mileage and the AEVs (All Electric Vehicles):
Given the economic imbalance that the whole world is currently dealing with, oil price hikes seem to be occurring more often than we would like it to happen or are used to. And now that expensive SUV or sports car you bought just got even more frustrating. Naturally everyone on Earth is looking for a viable solution to this aggravating problem; however, if the effects of the oil price hikes are irreversible at the moment then we must find some other means to travel in our cars. Needless to say that there have been dozens of ideas presented to counter this problem and it came in the form of ideas such as all electric vehicles (AEV), hybrid cars (gas and electric engines), ethanol or bio-diesel as a suitable replacement for crude oil and many more. But in exchange for their efficiency and renewable energy source the price to manufacture them is very unrealistic and as a result there have been fewer sales than ordinary gas engine-cars.
Gasoline Powered Vehicles
Estimates put gas powered vehicles at 1 liter of gasoline for every 10 kilometers of road. Vehicles can load up gas of up to 11 to 25 gallons of gas, which means that you could go as far as 110 kilometers to 250 kilometers on a full tank. Not bad considering the gas per mileage ratio, but spending $3-$5 per gallon of gas can be a pain in the neck as it will be $33 for a full tank refill on your station wagon and $125 on your SUV. If you’ll travel across the United States cruising in a vehicle (lets say from New York to Chicago which is precisely 773 miles in distance) you’ll have to refill your SUV at least 5 times in order to get there and spend more than $600 for the whole trip. How we got our numbers:
773 miles x 1.609 kilometers = 1,243.76 kilometers
1,243.76 kilometers = 4.9 times to refill a full tank of gas
250 kilometers for a full tank of gas
4.9 x $125 (price of a full tank gas) = $621.88 cents to get to Chicago
For more information on the distance conversions you can visit websites that have an online conversion tool, and convert miles, kilometers, feet, meters, yards, centimeters etc. If you travelled the same distance back in the 1990’s it would have only cost you the amount of 1 full tank refill now. Fuel costs have jumped up five times in less than 2 decades and are still rising even as we speak.
The electric car is fairly cheap, clean and can go as far as 40 – 100 miles (65 – 160 kilometers) after being fully charged, but the major concern is that there’s no assurance on whether or not you can find a recharging station on the destination where you plan to go. This is because there are very few recharging stations deployed around the country and in fact most of the cities in major countries around the world still have yet to adapt to this technology. The hybrid vehicle on the other hand is the go between gas powered and electric vehicles, but they cost between $22,000 to $100,000 while you can buy used gas powered vehicles for only $3,000 to $5,000 and the brand new ones costs about $10,000 to $40,000. Buying a hybrid car is for a long-term investment only and most people are not in that state of mind at the moment. One thing that’s outstanding about hybrid cars is that they give an overall improvement on the car’s range, and it can go as far as 15% to 70% further compared to AEV’s and gas powered vehicles.
Perhaps the best thing that should happen is that car companies and the government will go hand in hand and together inform and educate the people on which option is the best. Meanwhile the government should setup rechargeable stations all over the country as well as encourage people to buy hybrid cars.
