Drama: a Creative Activity for the Growing Children

By Osa Webmasterone Subscribe to RSS | December 8th 2011 | Views:

The above saying is very true in case of kids especially that they want to be involved in activities of their choice. This is also a good way of engaging them and teaching them things that they aren’t aware of. Drama is a particular activity that stimulates the creative parts of the children. It is defined as the representation of an imaginary or sometime real situation in the form of human performance. It is in the lands of earlier Greece that the concept of drama originated. In Greek, the word ‘drama’ means ‘action’.

The Greek poet Thespis is said to be the first dramatist and the first actor as well. The celebratory music of 6th-century BC Attica, the Greek region centered on Athens, was the birth place of western drama. In the list of the great dramatists of the world, the name of Shakespeare is still considered to in the top. He was famous for portraying women characters like Portia in ‘Julius Caesar’ and Lady Macbeth in ‘Macbeth’. The ancient Vedic period witnessed the birth of drama in India. The medium of language in the dramas during Vedic time was Sanskrit. In the Rig Veda, together with Pururava, Urvashi, Yama and Yami, Indra-Indrani, Sarma-Pani and Ushas Suktas, there was the mention of ancient Indian drama.

"Through the dramatic roles and worlds that are available vicariously in theatre and directly in process drama, we can learn both who we are and what we may be. It is this that makes the essential nature of both theatre and process drama profoundly educational" - Cecily O'Neill. Drama, in itself is a distinctive skill and thus many schools include in as a subject in the primary and secondary level. As drama represents an imaginary or real situation in the form of performance, so people engaged in playing the roles can explore, shape and represent the ideas, feelings and their consequences. There are many parents who prevent their children to participate in drama or theatres, because they think that it may impact their academics. But researches have proved that children participating in dramas have better attention span and score good grades in their tests. As dramatics is a group activity, so it helps develop the quality of developing group skills among children.

In dealing with our children, we concentrate more on their reading and writing habits, rather than on their communication skills. But to be a competent survivor in the world, they need to be a good communicator also. Drama facilitates communication skills and also makes us good orators. Moreover, it teaches to project the voice attractively and to speak words clearly. By engaging in dramatic activities, children learn the important quality of empathy. It allows them to understand how others think and act. It promotes the child’s imagination, which is one of the most important ingredients in the recipe of life. A sound imaginative mind is said to be the home of new and fresh ideas. So, we should encourage this art of expression both in schools and in home so that our children can reap enormous benefits that will stay with them long into adulthood.
