Buying fashionable jewellery is great fun and the perfect way to keep up with changes in trends and fashion. But trends come and go and the earrings you were wearing last season are suddenly a fashion faux pas. It’s tough to throw jewellery away, so we all tend to hoard some items and rightly so, because eventually you can guarantee, that trend will come round again in the future.

But what about those classic items of jewellery, the ones that last a lifetime? What are the pieces we should collect as we go along and potentially, pass on to others when we’re done with them? These are the bits of jewellery it’s worth saving for, taking the time to research and seek out the perfect, best quality we can afford. What are they?

Firstly, pearls are a great addition to any jewellery collection. They have completely shaken off their image as a bit old-fashioned and something only your Nan or someone wearing a twin-set would be seen in. Pearls can look demure, sexy, traditional or cool and funky. An extra long single strand is a good investment as it can be worn a number of ways to match any look or occasion.

Another great investment is solitaire diamonds. Generally, solitaire rings represent a classic engagement ring style, but solitaire necklaces and earrings will always look stunning. Wait until your can afford something decent and treat yourself.

Regarding rings, good investments are full eternity rings. Diamonds are popular, but don’t feel constrained if you have an alternative favourite gemstone.

Cluster designs are also classic items you might want to consider. Very traditional designs like a ruby, sapphire or emerald surrounded by white diamonds are great, but can feel a little dated. Why not bring this familiar style bang up to date by seeking out unique colour combinations. Pink sapphires or garnets look great teamed with black diamonds, or how about yellow topaz and amethysts? Let your imagination go a little bit mad. Using let expensive stones, as well as giving a really distinctive look, also means you can afford to buy a larger, more dramatic piece.

Tennis bracelets are named in honour of tennis champion Chris Evert, who wore one that broke during a US Open match, which had to be stopped so she could find the precious diamonds. This gave the in-line diamond bracelet style its new name and it has become an absolute classic. Diamonds are the traditional and most popular stone and suit the style perfectly, but you need to spend a lot of money to ensure a high quality of stone. Other gemstones like emerald, sapphire and tanzanite are common as well, but you will find this style made in almost any jewel you fancy. But as we all know, diamonds are a girl’s best friend.
