Interior Designing – a mammoth task that can be made simpler with a little common sense!

When we build our dream house or buy apartments in most cases nowadays, even before the idea of having a place for our own sinks in, we start worrying again. And the biggest worry of all is about how the interiors can be done! Generally two extreme blunders are done while designing, either the interiors will be too simple or it will be stuffed with too many things. Once, I went to a friend’s house. It was a huge and beautiful two storey building in which 50 people can live comfortably! I was so eager to see how they had done their interiors. When I went inside, I was shocked to see only a television, couch and a couple of photo frames adorning the room. It was the same for all the other rooms. It was really sad to see a beautiful house without any decorations to enhance its beauty. The place looked as formal as a corporate office. Only difference between an office and that house were a couple of pictures and toys that were scattered here and there! When I went to my relative’s place it was the other extreme! It was a two bedroom flat, very compact and correct for two people. The sitting room had a huge couch that one needs to crawl over it to get to the other room! Similarly, too many colors were used in such a way that one will get confused as to where one room ends and the other is starting!

I was taken aback on both the occasions and wondered if people really “felt at home” when they come back at the end of a tedious day. At times people get extremely obsessive with designing their interiors. They think it as a status image and make their interiors so gaudy that it hurts our eye to see them! One important fact that they don’t realize is that others are going to come to their home only once in a blue moon, but they are the ones who are going to live there!

So let us not design our house for others pleasure, but for our own. Do you like bright orange color? Then use it as a theme for one of the rooms. Do you like flowers? Then go for an ethnic floral theme for designing. You will be the best person to know what will look best for your home. Interior designers may give professional help, but see if you like what they are suggesting.

Interiors need not be expensive, simple photo frames placed in an aesthetic way, a vase filled with the latest blooms, birthday cards and other occasion cards put on display, daily use things like pen holder, paper stand even shoe racks when placed right will make the interiors look beautiful. This doesn’t require a theme or any professional help. A little bit of creativity and common sense is all that is required. Make your home look like a home – cozy and inviting. Not a place where you walk on an egg-shell and always afraid of breaking something or dirtying! What is the point in calling a place “home” when you are not comfortable and be yourself?

When interiors are getting done, the most important thing to notice is the size of the home! This might sound ridiculous, but the sad fact is that many don’t decorate according to the size of their place but according to the amount of decorations they have. So if you are moving from one home to the other, have a Moving Checklist so that you can add or discard things according to the space available in your new home.
