Security for Apartment Dwellers

Apartment security is not all that different from house security, with the exception of a few major points. First of all, people who live in apartments are more susceptible to burglaries. The main reason for this is that there are people coming in and out of apartment buildings all the time. It is virtually impossible to know who should be there and who shouldn’t. This makes it much easier for burglars to case out their target because they can simply blend into the surroundings.

The other major difference between apartment security and house security is that if you want to install a home security system in your house, you can do it without getting permission from anyone. If you want to install an alarm system in your apartment, you will likely need the permission of the leasing agent or owner of the building. This can make it a complicated process to get an alarm system put in. For this reason, many people opt to not install an alarm system in their apartment and instead take other actions that can increase their safety without needing to get other people involved.

First and foremost, never leave your door open. Most burglaries are acts of opportunity. The criminal sees an open door and takes advantage of it. Lock your door even if you are only going to be gone for a few minutes to get your mail or your laundry. If your unit is being cased by someone, these will be the times he or she will hit. Burglars have their craft down to a science and can be in and out with your valuables in the time it takes for you to get your dry clothes into a hamper to carry back.

Do not leave a spare key outside your apartment. In the first place, there are not many places outside of an apartment to hide a key and second, burglars know all the hiding places. They know to look under a flower pot or under your doormat. Leaving a key outside is the same as leaving your door wide open with a sign that says, “come on in.” You can always leave a key with a neighbor or your doorman, if you have one.

Never open the door to anyone you aren’t expecting. This is a sure-fire way to let someone in who shouldn’t be there and he or she doesn’t even have to fight you to get in. Always ask for identification, and if you still aren’t sure who is at your door, call the company the person says he or she is with and verify his or her identity.
