Water softeners are ideal products for many Michigan residents in areas where well water is used, and where there is a lot of mineral buildup in the water supply, or in the ground water. Water softeners come in both single filtration tank systems as well as double water softener systems, with two tanks.

Minerals are not actually bad for you to consume in your water, yet there are valid reasons for why you may wish to eliminate them from your water supply. Hard water, as it is called when the minerals are in high content in the water, can cause the rusting and buildup of deposits on your plumbing fixtures and in the pipes where you can’t see it. It can affect the flow of water through your house. If it doesn’t do that, some people really dislike the taste that may accompany high-mineral water, or they may not like the fact that the water sometimes leaves a film or slime residue on the body, or on whatever else you are washing. The EWS Total Conditioning Systems will remove sediment, chlorine and chemicals, and will condition the water hardness so that it no longer forms scale or bonds with glass or metal. It does not remove calcium or fluoride from the water.

Water softeners come in both single filtration tank systems as well as double water softener systems, with two tanks. The difference is in power and maintenance. This article will now explore a bit about the maintenance of your water softener system if you choose to purchase and install one in your water supply. The Home Master Softener will remove calcium from the water and put salt in its place. Both systems are effective at treating hard water problems but produce different feeling water. The EWS water feels like natural spring water, whereas the Home Master Softener water feels either silky or slippery depending on you. Some people will use both -- the EWS system on their main water so that all water is treated, and the Home Master Softener just before the hot water heater so just the hot water is salt softened.

There are a few basic reasons why a water softener may stop working as well as you’d like it to. These usually have to do with maintenance rather than the breakdown of the system itself. First, you can check to see if the brine tank needs to be replaced. Both single and twin water softeners require salt in their tanks, because the sodium ions will replace the calcium and magnesium minerals that are in the hard water. If you don’t have the appropriate amount or kind of salt in your system, it may not work as you need it to.

Next, if that’s not the issue, you may need to clean a resin bed that is fouled with iron. This is a result of usage and time, naturally. The resin is actually small polystyrene beads that have a charge to them and attract the minerals from the water. If this is clogged or deactivated by too much iron, it will not do its job properly for water softening.

Lastly, if that’s not the case either, you may need to clean your resin tank injector. The injector may be clogged with salt or sediments. This, again, is a natural process of usage and time.

If you continually upkeep your water softener, you’ll be able to enjoy softened water for years to come.
