Irrespective of the region or the culture, if there is a common feature shared by most of the homes in this world, it is a rug. Including this accessory in the scheme of things is not just a great way of enhancing the décor also serve as a type of floor protection. Every house has its share of children, elderly, dirt, dust and foot traffic all of which tend to add to the daily chaos and impact the lives of members residing in the house. In such a situation, what could be a better solution than cover the floor with a number of rugs which apart from facilitating cleanliness would also prevent accidents and reduce noise?

There are various factors which come into play while selecting a rug and if asked for an opinion, most people would opt for one which provides both functionality and aestheticism. A Persian variety, for example, is something more than just being a stylish accessory. It is an embodiment of durability and high value and more than anything else its presence is reminiscent of palaces, monuments and royalty. Hailing from a region which was erstwhile Persia, these rugs are usually in demand courtesy of their exquisite design and antique touch.

With Persian rugs, it is tradition which stands to the fore especially since it was in 5th century AD that the first of its kind was woven with hand. From then on this carpet has always maintained a distinct style of its own due to reasons like their hand-made nature, their typical motifs and designs and the high quality raw material used. Another interesting snippet which makes this rug sought-after is the fact it has always been patronized by important people. From the kings and queens of the yesteryears to the contemporary noblemen, these have received more attention than any other category.

Anyone who visits an emporium with the intention of buying a rug would be able to easily identify a Persian carpet from hordes of others thanks to its special nature. Made from high quality silk, wool or cotton these are woven knot by knot so that the motif or the pattern is either centrally located or is spread all over the area including the border. Some Persian rugs may be asymmetrical in terms of designs as well, like Gabbeh and Kelims but most of the times the motifs are an echo of the geographical area from where this art evolved and are now intermingled with modern patterns.

’Boteh’ the Farsi word describing an open flower bud or a palm leaf is a commonly found motif adorning Persian rugs. Another very popular design is known as ’Gul’ meaning flower which is typically found in Turkish, Khal Mohammadi and Gorgan varieties and this is depicted in an octagonal shape to cover the entire area. A design which is mostly expressed in rectilinear and curvilinear formation is ’Herati’ featuring the repetitive pattern of a diamond surrounded by curved leaves. ’Mina-Khani’ is a design inspired from nature while a ’Rosette’ means a rose and is a signature trademark of a Nain rug.

One of the best ways of displaying a Persian rug would be to lay it in an empty expanse or hang it like a curtain in a niche so that it is conspicuous by its presence. Courtesy of their rich history and special method of weaving, these are relatively higher priced as compared to other types of carpets. Hence buying one for your home would require more than just a pocketful of investment. An alternative option would be that of considering auctions, particularly those meant for disposing Persian antique rugs. But for this it is imperative to seek adequate information as also education so as to be able to judge the auctioned piece accurately.
