The 6 Craziest Ways to Clean a Gutter or Roof

By David Raju Subscribe to RSS | February 17th 2012 | Views:

1. While barefoot

Most people are astute enough to take certain precautions if they have to climb up onto their roof. This man in Cambridge, New Zealand, is apparently a little deficient in the wisdom department. He is scrambling around his tile roof without shoes, spray washing his gutters, and forgetting that he could tumble to his death at any moment.

2. Get your kids to do it

Children should have to earn their keep, right? Evidently, this Minneapolis family feels that the youngsters should help out with the gutter cleaning as well. And for those of you who see this photo and become alarmed, calm down -- there's not that much guttering to clean out on that section, so they'll be done in no time!

3. Get a robot to do it

Until the day comes where we all have to bow to our robot overlords, we might as well get some practical use out of them. This remote control robot fits neatly inside gutters, moves along its own tank-like tracks, and has a spade to remove anything in its path.

4. Enlist the aid of a higher power

This man is cleaning the roof of an old church in the Netherlands - so he's way up high and praying to a higher power that he doesn't fall. This is truly a tall order and a lofty goal. If this picture heightens your curiosity, you may be wondering if his blood pressure is elevated.

5. With a lawn mower

This makes mowing your lawn seem simple by comparison. But evidently, many homes and other structures in Norway have grass growing on their roofs -- and you have to keep the flora under control, right? It's hard to decide what is weirder: mowing your roof, or doing it while wearing dark socks, tennis shoes, and no shirt.

6. With garden tools

You may have seen this Tacoma, Washington, home featured in a September 2008 edition of People magazine. The couple pictured above has planted numerous varieties of flowers and other plants atop the roof of their 110-year old home. This "green roof" is beautiful, environmentally-friendly, and naturally protected from flower-digging dogs.
