How Safe is Rubber Mulch for Backyard Landscaping

By James Subscribe to RSS | February 24th 2012 | Views:

If you are in some way thinking of rubber mulches to landscape your backyard, you should think of its viability as a secure option. If you care about the environment you will be definitely concerned about the trees in your backyard. To be very honest, trees are not affected by rubber mulch. Many manufacturers dye the mulch in colors like bright red, teal or other bold colors. Though these mulches cost more than double of the wooden mulches, people prefer them usually. They are known for their quality. Unlike the wood chips or the bark, they also do not get washed away in rainstorms. They are also safe from the attack of the termites or carpenter ants and do not get rotten easily. The characteristic bounciness of these mulches makes them ideal for the playgrounds. These mulches also receive the highest shock absorption ratings in any kind of playground covering, surpassing wood chips, gravel and sand.

Generally the manufacturers of the rubber mulch claims that they are non-leaching, non-flammable and non toxic to both plants and animals. Several recent research reports give a contradictory viewpoint, on the other hand. They say that rubber can leach chemicals that contaminate water and destroy marine life. Scientists also say that small amounts of zinc in the rubber can leach into the soil. If the soil is acidic in nature, chemical overload will take place and will kill shallow rooted flowers, shrubs and vegetables.

Rubber mulch generally consists of either waste tire buffing or nuggets of rubber from tires that are ground up whole, after having their steel bands removed. You can use almost any tire to make these mulches, including passenger vehicle tires and large truck and trailer tires. For gardening and landscaping purposes, rubber mulches are used..
