Engineering and Quality

Engineering is something that has to be done continuously. Quality, safety and usability, to name but a few, are all results of engineering. However, rarely we ask about engineering or research and development of the product we are buying. It is as if we automatically assume that if some product is on the market, it has passed all the tests and is good in every aspect. Unfortunately, the majority of products are released on the market in a hurry without proper testing. An unfortunate example of this is the new Nokia phone called Lumia. The ones who bought it within the first few months of its release have been quite disappointed with the phone. The calendar lacked in functionality and quite many people had to face the reality that the battery stopped charging at some point. Small electronic devices aren’t that dangerous, but what about bigger devices and appliances? If the research and development along with engineering has been poorly conducted, it might result in dangerous situations, such as fires and injuries.

When we decided to get a fireplace installed in our cottage, we paid extra attention to the engineering of the fireplace. We did a lot of research of our own in order to find the right company and professionals. After quite some research we found this Finnish fireplace company called Uunisepät that has over thirty years of research and development work behind them and were acknowledged in engineering. Moreover, they install their own fireplaces, which means that their workers are well introduced to their fireplaces and know exactly how they should be installed.

After visiting their store, in about two weeks, an expert from Uunisepät came to take the measurements, explained once again the whole process and said that in about three weeks our fireplace would be installed and ready to use. So easy, so effortless!

Especially after this experience working with Uunisepät, I have come to realize how truly important good engineering is and how it reflects on the overall culture of a company. Good engineering is reflected on the employees, too, because everyone knows that they are working with a great product.
