Energy and Water Conservation for Your Hot Tub

By Ian Jemson Subscribe to RSS | January 13th 2012 | Views:

A hot tub is a prized possession for those who are lucky enough to have one at their home. However, a hot tub can result in some serious wastage of power and water. Wastage of energy and water is not only harmful to the environment, it also cause your bills to increase to an uncomfortable level. This is why it is always wise to consider the ways to conserve power and water while using your spa hot tub.

Here are few tips that will help you minimize the consumption of electricity and water being used in your hot tub spa:

• Always ensure that your hot tub heater is set to a temperature of 102ºF to 104ºF. This will avoid overheating of water and will save electricity. At the same time it will also ensure that the temperature of water remains within the endurable limit for a normal person.

• Ensure that the hot tub is not using the heater constantly, particularly during the peak load timings. This can be done very easily with the hot tubs having a timer. Hot tubs with a good insulation are able to keep the water hot for few hours even if the heater is not constantly switched on.

• Make sure that you are not leaving your thermostat switched on if you are leaving home for a vacation. If your vacation has duration of a week or more, it will save you a significant amount of money on your electricity bill.

• During the off-peak hours of the day, you can reduce the filtration cycles in order to save electricity during the off peak hours. Of course, you should consider the power rating of your filtration pump before you modify the settings at your own. If your filtration pump is already a low wattage one and doesn’t consume a lot of power, you can just leave it as it is since it is meant to run continually.

• Ensure that your spa cover is well insulated in order to prevent loss of energy and heat. You should also regularly check the foam cover to ensure that it is not broken or damaged. A damaged cover may increase the leakage of heat and thus will require your heater to work extra consuming a lot more energy than required.

• Make sure that the water in your hot tub doesn’t come in a direct contact with wind. Chilling wind can cause it to cool down and hence, your spa hot tub will consume more energy to heat water to maintain a reasonable temperature.

• Ensure that water is not being wasted due to leakage, breakages, or due to an improper height of your hot tub.
