There might be several reasons why you believe that diy woodworking could be an perfect activity for you. You may possibly have several small woodworking projects that need doing around your own home and finally decided that you wish to undertake doing the work yourself. Alternatively you may have merely come to the decision that you might like to have a go at woodworking

Before you actually start there are however a number of questions you would like answering.

Does it cost a lot to start diy woodworking?

In truth the amount you spend to begin your hobby is totally your own decision. You need to decide how seriously you are going to take your new hobby and how much time you are likely to spend doing it each week. If you are only intending to perform small woodworking projects every now and then you will probably not want to spend a vast amount of your hard earned cash. If you have a lot of spare time on your hands and think that you will be inclined to spend a large amount of your free time doing diy woodworking then you will be more likely to spend more on getting your workshop equipped.

At least some monetary outlay will be required even if you are simply intending doing small woodworking projects.

What tools should I buy?

The quantity of tools you need will to a large degree be dictated by the size of the diy woodworking project you are embarking upon. If you are a complete beginner then I would strongly advise that your initial project is not too ambitious. Small projects will quite obviously require fewer tools.

A lot of small woodworking projects can be completed quite easily with hand tools. You will require basic items such as a saw, hammer, screwdrivers, and a tape measure to get started but may possibly require additional tools as well based on your specific project.

Keep in mind that the tools you purchase will last for a number of years and will be used on a large number of projects. Choose good quality equipment if at all possible.

Is it essential to acquire power tools?

Many of the procedures are less difficult with power tools but you can get along without them. Power tools may however quite often achieve far better results than their hand operated equivalents.

Many people will buy an electric or battery powered drill. Making holes using an electric drill is easier and quicker than with a hand drill and I have no hesitation in suggesting that you obtain one if at all possible

One of the most challenging hand tools to master is the saw. If you purchase an electric circular saw you will be able to make accurate cuts quickly and easily. Table saws and mitre saws can also be purchased and are an excellent investment if you have the use for them.

Power tools can of course be bought as and when you have a need for them.

Will it take long to master diy woodworking?

As with all things some of the techniques will take time to become skilled at but the basics for woodworking are reasonably straight forward. Naturally it will take some people more time than others to reach an acceptable standard. You should however be able to learn the techniques required to do small woodworking projects within a few hours. Your overall skill level will naturally improve when you have had a little practical experience.
