Cutting Board Designs “Woodcrafting at Its Best”

By Riley Poole Subscribe to RSS | April 19th 2012 | Views:

Wood designs are probably a greater art than many people would recognize at first. Carpentry seems for many to be a simple trade, but in fact, there are many issues that arise for both a practical crafter and an artistic crafter. One of those issues would be the wood choice. Wooden cutting board designs are a great example of this, because the wood type will affect both the board’s performance as well as the appearance. This article will talk about some of those wood types in some of the best cutting boards in the woodcraft world.

The standard woods that people tend to prefer in their cutting board designs are maple, cherry, and walnut. They have distinct hues and grains, swirls, and smoothness. Some have tighter grains, which mean that bacteria have less of a chance to get in between them. That’s one of the more practical matters. Additionally, these woods tend to be durable and harder, which means they will endure the chops and slices of knives repeatedly. Birch and maple are more of the tighter grains, while oak are a more porous grain. That may be a reason why even if someone likes oak’s aesthetic, a wood designer may dissuade them from choosing it for their cutting board design. When maple, cherry, and walnut are oiled and sanded to smooth perfection by a skilled wood worker, they become extraordinarily beautiful, in many people’s opinions.

Let’s take a closer look at cherry wood, for example, which many of the best cutting boards are made from. Along with maple, cherry is a very popular wood for its interesting grain patterns and its rich, warm color—especially when skillfully worked and sanded. It even gives off a delicate smell that people tend to find very pleasing and fresh. It is firm, strong, yet not too heavy. Cutting board designs can be flexible with cherry wood because the wood tends to be stable and relatively easy to cut. More interesting and complex designs can be woven into this wood than certain other woods—more easily.

So when it comes to the best wooden cutting boards out there, the carpenter needs to have skill in cutting and carving as well as knowledge and intuition in choosing the wood right for the design, and right for the functioning of the board. This balance is one that any artist or creator faces, and carpentry is no exception.
