The relative simplicity of the DEA engineering liquid micro flowmeter concept makes it far less costly than any other positive displacement flowmeters which may be capable of measuring similar low flow rates. When compared to other positive displacement flowmeters, the micro flowmeter of DEA engineering is less susceptible to wear. The parts of DEA flow meter are so small so that the relative velocities amongst the moving parts are very low. The forces acting on the side of the nutator is offset by largely opposing forces acting on the opposite side which makes the flow smooth and fast.
The end of the beam of the flow meter is rounded which results in a rolling motion rather than a sliding operation. Since the moving parts of the DEA micro flow meter is not rigidly attached to each other or the motion detection mechanism, the flow meter is capable of measuring similar low flow rates. If at all the DEA micro flow meter becomes clogged with debris it can be easily disassembled, cleaned and reassembled with little care in the field. The micro flow meter during each cycle, an amount of liquid is displaced equal to the difference in the volumes of the chambers minus the volumes of the pistons. This process repeats in a continuous flow mode at the rates of 1 to 210 complete cycles per second proportionately to the fluid flow through the meter.

Signal detection is accomplished by light interruptions of a photo emitter / detector device. A ferromagnetic wire tracks the magnet in the nutator causing these interruptions. The interruptions are electronically manifested as sine waves which are then conditioned by conventional electronic means to provide a square wave output. In very low flow applications, two Micro Flowmeters may be essential to attain the desired accuracy or repeatability. This is required when the liquid to be measured is low in lubricity. If the micro flowmeter is subject to hydraulic pulsations, check valves may be required. For the smooth operation of micro flow meter it is strongly recommended that wires which control the inductive devices not be bundled over long distances with sensor signal wires, even if these wires are shielded.
