Why More Young Women are Considering Donating Eggs to Deserving Couples

When a couple has been faced with fertility struggles, and multiple attempts at in vitro fertilization have failed, they may turn to their last hope: Egg donation. Although a newer medical technology, egg donation has proven to be very successful and offers hope for conceiving a child. If you have considered donating your eggs, you have probably found yourself feeling overwhelmed with the decision. For most women, the decision does not come easy, but is one that is made with careful consideration for all parties involved.

One of the most important factors to understand about donating eggs is that it is purely choice. There are many wonderful donors, and although egg donor programs are always interested in expanding their donor choices, they don’t have a need to push women to donate. To reach out to potential donors, ads are posted online, in publications or at college campuses that target the types of women that make good egg donors. The ads can then be answered by those young women who are interested in the act of donating their eggs. In other cases, it may be a friend or family member that recommends a donor program that made a difference in her life.

Generally speaking, donors choose to donate their eggs for two reasons: Altruistic motives and the compensation. Donors come from all life experiences, and some have seen friends or family members struggle with infertility, while others simply want to help a deserving couple. The wonderful part to donating eggs is that it allows a couple to go through the beautiful moments of conceiving a child, experiencing pregnancy and delivering a baby. To help another couple achieve this is the most wonderful thing that any young woman could do for another.

The compensation should never be a driving factor for donating eggs, but instead should be a reward for the time and effort put forth. Many people jump to the conclusion that donors are just “selling” their eggs for money, but this is simply not the case. To donate eggs is not an easy task; it involves a lengthy application process, intense medical and psychological evaluations, hormone injections and an egg retrieval procedure that uses a needle. Donors have to attend many doctor’s appointments and ultrasounds and may experience side effects from the medication, as well as discomfort from the retrieval process. Women who choose to go through this process have more on their mind that just money; they truly want to give something invaluable to a deserving family.

The compensation is a fair reward for what’s involved in the process, and donors often find that after helping a family achieve their goal, they may achieve one of theirs. Perhaps it’s paying off school loans, making a down payment on a home or purchasing a dependable car to get to work. Donors feel most fulfilled when they know that not only have they donated something significant, but also were able to accomplish something significant in their own lives.

Some people also feel that egg donating is targeted toward young college girls that are in need of money and don’t truly understand the ramifications of what they are doing. However, it is this age group that is the best candidates for egg donation. Most programs want women who are in their 20s because this is the time that women are most fertile and have the healthiest eggs. College girls are often targeted as well because egg donor programs attempt to meet the needs of their recipient couples, many of which look for a higher education in their donors. Recipients also look for specific talents, interests and hobbies, and many college goers are attending school to pursue particular interests. donating eggs.

Although many donor programs gladly welcome repeat donors, there is a limit to how many times a woman can donate her eggs. According to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, a woman can donate her eggs only six times in her lifetime. Some women may choose to donate twice in a year, but this is usually the most that women will go through, as the process takes several months of commitment.

Egg donor programs value their loyalty to their donors and ensure that these young women are kept safe for their own health and fertility. Together, both egg donors and egg donor programs build a strong support network for couples to feel accepted and understood as they embark on their journey to creating a child. It is with this notion that more young women are considering donating eggs.
