Whether Big or Small, They’re Still Dental Implants After All

For years, dental implants have helped millions of people fill their tooth gaps. Implants may not be as natural as the original teeth people once had, but at least they give people with missing teeth a second chance to smile and eat properly. Dental implants come in different shapes and sizes, designed to act as artificial teeth replacements.

Dental implants are synthetic teeth that are composed of titanium roots and artificial crowns. Over time, the jawbone regenerates; eventually surrounding the titanium root, and fixing the dental implant in place. Two kinds of dental implants currently exist in the market: regular implants and mini dental implants (MDI). While they may seem like competing against each other, both types of implants are widely used and accepted by various dental organizations.

Regular: The tried-and-tested regular dental implants have been around for some time. The first of their kind, regular implants have bases made out of titanium, a durable metal that blends well with natural bone tissue. Regular dental implants usually have diameters measuring from 4-6mm.

Aside from its incredible durability, regular implants are stable, given their wider surface area. It is commonly used as a substitute for missing larger teeth like molars. As these teeth have big roots to keep them in place, the titanium base replacing will also have to be big and stable.

MDI: MDIs are the more recent versions of the dental implants Atlanta dentists offer to their patients. You can probably say that these were also influenced by common trends in modern technology: the one where things you use every day get smaller. MDIs have a diameter of no more than 3 mm, but it is also made out of titanium.

Since less titanium goes into making MDIs, they are 60 percent cheaper than its bigger counterpart. Placing MDIs is easier and less invasive because its size only requires smaller holes drilled in the patient’s jawbone. Experts in dentistry in Atlanta use MDIs to replace smaller teeth like incisors, as the small space will help the implant fit in nicely.

While there are debates regarding which type of implant is better than the other, most people still agree that both types of Atlanta dental implants will remain in demand for a long time.
