It is mostly used in the treatment of tumours in lungs, breasts, oral cavity etc. During this process the patient generally has to stay in the hospital and may or may not be allowed visitors, depending on the radiation strength given to him or her. Post radiation therapy, there is no radioactivity left in the patient’s body.
The radiation therapy can be administered through a number of processes like LINAC, photo beam, 3D-CRT and IGRT. Intensity Modulation Radiation Therapy (IMRT) is another process by which the Gamma Radiation, or X-Ray Radiation, whichever is used, is administered as a beam and it is cut off at the surrounding organ area. It is used mostly to minimize the effect of the radiation.
The side effects of the treatment include diarrhoea, skin irritation and pigmentation, which may be permanent. Also, there is inflammation of the area along with inflammation of the organs around it and tiredness. Generally the side effects are localised. The treatment may affect the immune system of the body as radiation treatment involves burning up of the body’s white cells, which acts to defend our body from germen.
