One of the widespread among the lifestyle diseases in today’s world is cancer. Cancer is the abnormal growth of white blood cells in a specific part of the body or all over it. Generally, if it is detected in the nascent stage, then it can be treated with a combination of chemotherapy and cancer radiation therapy.

Cancer Radiation Therapy

Cancer Radiation therapy aims to treat cancer by burning down the cancerous cells using rays that are targeted specifically at one area. The rays given are generally Gamma rays and a radiation oncologist is the person who administers this. The treatment lasts from a week to several weeks, depending on the doses that need to be administered. Sometimes, instead of giving external rays, a small container of radioactive material is implanted in the patient, depending on the amount of radiation needed, and called Brachytherapy.

It is mostly used in the treatment of tumours in lungs, breasts, oral cavity etc. During this process the patient generally has to stay in the hospital and may or may not be allowed visitors, depending on the radiation strength given to him or her. Post radiation therapy, there is no radioactivity left in the patient’s body.

The radiation therapy can be administered through a number of processes like LINAC, photo beam, 3D-CRT and IGRT. Intensity Modulation Radiation Therapy (IMRT) is another process by which the Gamma Radiation, or X-Ray Radiation, whichever is used, is administered as a beam and it is cut off at the surrounding organ area. It is used mostly to minimize the effect of the radiation.

The side effects of the treatment include diarrhoea, skin irritation and pigmentation, which may be permanent. Also, there is inflammation of the area along with inflammation of the organs around it and tiredness. Generally the side effects are localised. The treatment may affect the immune system of the body as radiation treatment involves burning up of the body’s white cells, which acts to defend our body from germen. However, it is possible to control the amount of side effects. cancer treatment centers in India.

Cancer can be treated only in specialized institutes as a lot is involved in its treatment. There should be a safe environment for both the patient and the people around him or her. There are some very good cancer treatment centers in India. Bengaluru, New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and now Kolkata have some of the most upgraded cancer treatment centers in India where people from all over the South Asian subcontinent come for treatment.

These centres have hospitals where at least 4 oncologists are working and some of them have as many as 19 oncologists on board. They offer treatment using gamma rays, x-rays, chemotherapy etc and surgical oncology, paediatric oncology, Cancer Radiation Therapy oncology. These centres have technologically advanced equipment like 3D-Conformal, CT Simulators, Steriotactic Radio surgery (SRS) and Stereotactic Radiotherapy (SRT). They also help to provide assistance to patients in an advanced stage, looking to get cancer treatment abroad.
