The Various Effects of Male Hormone Replacement Therapy

By James Blee Subscribe to RSS | March 22nd 2012 | Views:

Although a lot of men are unaware of the same, they do suffer from menopause, although it is called andropause. This is the phase where there is drop in hormone levels in the male body as a result of which they may need male hormone replacement therapy to keep the levels of testosterone up. Plenty of changes are seen due to the loss of testosterone, some of which are drastic. These include loss of libido, problems in remembering or in focusing, fatigue and reduction in the density of the bone which could lead to osteoporosis.

male hormone replacement is not suggested by those who have prostate cancer because testosterone tends to have an enlarging effect on the prostates of older men. Enlargement of prostates can also cause urination problems. This therapy is also highly discouraged amongst those who have complained of heart diseases or problems related to high cholesterol in the past. Another interesting side effect of this therapy is seen amongst those who suffer diabetes. Testosterone has an effect on the blood sugar levels in the body, which means the dosage of insulin has to be altered as well due to the testosterone replacement.

A very serious side effect caused by hormone replacement in men is the effect of good cholesterol whose levels might be drastically reduced thus causing high blood pressure which could further cause a heart stroke too. Those who have undergone testosterone replacement might also feel the effects in the form of irritability, headaches and mood swings. One must also be careful about liver toxicity because testosterone has a great effect on the retention of sodium in the body. All these things need to be carefully thought out before going for the therapy.
