Taking Care of Your Skin during Pregnancy

It is a known fact that during pregnancy, the way you treat your body is very crucial to the health of the baby growing inside of you. In addition to being conscious of your protein intake, avoiding too much caffeine and consuming only certain types of meat, it is equally important to take care of what you put on your body as to what you put inside of your body.

For example, one might not even consider the effect of the lotions that you apply on your skin which seep into your body through the skin on your baby. The content of you lotions and oils are of vital concern especially with a developing baby inside you.

According to Skin Care experts in Vancouver, everything that you apply on your skin will not only affect you but also your baby.

Are Lotions Safe?

So you make ask if it is truly safe to apply lotions and creams during pregnancy.

Not all lotions, creams and moisturizers are entirely unsafe for use by pregnant women. One needs to check the ingredients and contents of the particular lotion in question to make sure that some specific ingredients don’t get absorbed into your bloodstream and harm you or your baby.

The more specialized and powerful the skin product, the more wary we need to be about its effects on your skin. Most products available in the market are typically safe but there are some contents that are considered potentially injurious to the health of the mother as well as the growing baby.

These are the factors that need to be considered while shopping for skin care products for pregnant women-

1. Retinoid-

Especially for mothers who plan to breast feed their babies, one needs to avoid products such as anti-aging moisturizers and other lotions which contain retinoid. This a type of a vitamin A that facilitates the quick division of cells and helps avoid the breaking down of skin collagen. At the same time, there are a number of studies which suggest that high levels of vitamin A can be harmful to a growing child and can cause birth defects.

There is no need to worry if you are using skin creams which contain retinoid since they mainly impact the baby when taken orally, but it is definitely something that must be avoided. Retinoid will be presented on the ‘ingredients’ or ‘contents’ label of the packaging in the form of, Differin (adapelene), Retin-A, Renova (tretinoin), Retinoic acid, Retinol, Retinyl linoleate, Retinyl palmitate, Tazorac and avage (Tazarotene).

In addition to this, Salicyclic acid is also considered to be a root cause of several complications during pregnancy. Consult your doctor before you choose to consume or apply any kind of skin care product while you pregnant.
