Sciatica Stretches That Help Cure Sciatica

Sciatica is the pain caused by the irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve. The pain is mainly felt in the lower back region and may radiate down the legs right up to the feet. There are a number of stretches for sciatica and patients have found a great deal of relief by performing these simple exercises.

Treatment with drugs may be necessary to get rid of this problem, especially if the patient experiences severe pain that cannot be controlled with simple sciatica stretches. Before visiting a doctor for help, you can try simple workouts that have proven to be effective for many patients, especially in the initial stages of the problem. Sitting for prolonged periods of time may aggravate the situation. Hence, patients who suffer with sciatica are generally advised to move around as much as they can. You can perform simple exercises and stretches for sciatica at home as well as your workplace at regular intervals to engage the muscles and prevent them from becoming stiff.

Sciatica stretches such as the gastrocnemius stretches involve the gastrocnemius muscles in the leg. To perform this exercise, you will have to first lie down on your back with hands on either side. Now, inhale and lift the left leg slowly to a 90 degree angle with toes pointing towards the ceiling. Hold this position for about 15 seconds. Then lower the leg very slowly while you exhale. Repeat with the right leg. It is important to concentrate on your respiration as well while you do these stretches for sciatica for a better impact.

The other sciatica stretches include the calcaneal stretches and these stretches can be done while you are seated. Be seated comfortably and ensure that your back is straight and the shoulders are aligned with the neck and the rest of your body. Now, stretch your leg and first point the sole and then the heel. Alternate these exercises with the other leg and repeat the same at least 10 times. This will help in strengthening the muscles around the ankles. These simple stretches for sciatica and are found to be extremely beneficial.

Lower back stretches are also helpful in easing the pain. While doing these stretches you must ensure you support the weight of your body with the help of your hands on your thighs. These sciatica stretches will help in strengthening the buttock, pelvic, and lumbar region. In case the stretches for sciatica don’t help in alleviating the pain, you may have to try other treatment options such as reflexology, acupuncture or even surgery. Very often, patients find relief with the help of these stretches which is least expensive treatment option for this problem. Ensure you do these stretches and exercises slowly and systematically. Else, you may end up doing more harm than good and you may aggravate the symptoms as well.
