Reishi Mushroom Extract: a Medicinal Mushroom with Countless Benefits

Our modern medicines are derived from the medicinal plants that were discovered centuries ago. Human beings have relied on nature for cures to their ailments for thousands of years. Moreover, we are still discovering hitherto unknown plants with phenomenal medicinal uses. Included in this array of beneficial flora are fungi—though fungi are not technically classified as plants.

Fungi are different from plants because their fungal cells have cell walls that contain chitin—a derivative of glucose. This distinguishes it from a plant’s cell wall, which contains cellulose. Genetic researchers have also argued that fungi are more closely related to animals than to plants. One particularly beneficial fungus is the Reishi mushroom, which was known as ‘the mushroom of immortality’ in ancient China and Japan, where it was predominantly used as a form of traditional medicine. Reishi mushrooms are also scientifically known as Ganoderma lucidum and are naturally abundant in the wild. They grow on the bases of deciduous trees. It is presently cultivated under sterile conditions on logs and woodchip beds.

Reishi mushrooms produce triterpenes, also known as ganoderic acids. These acids have a similar molecular structure to steroid hormones. Triterpenes are a type of terpenes, an organic compound produced by plants that may also serve as a primary constituent of essential oils. Triterpenes are composed of six isoprene units like that of squalene—a major constituent of shark liver oil.

Reishi is usually prepared in a hot water tincture or is served as a hot water extract. According to modern research, its extracts have great effects on the immune system. It also supports liver health and may help eliminate tumors. Additionally, Reishi inhibits platelet accumulation, which helps lower blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar.

The Reishi mushroom is commonly used to boost the immune system and treat viral infections such as influenza, lung conditions such as asthma and bronchitis, as well as heart, kidney, and liver disease. It is also used to treat chronic fatigue, altitude sickness, insomnia, and stomach ulcers. Reishi can also treat prostate cancer if it is used in combination with other herbs.

Furthermore, research has proven that Reishi mushroom extract helps in oxygenating the blood, thus improving the functionality of the lungs and hemoglobin. Low oxygen in the blood may be the result of cancer, infections, or toxicity.

Reishi extracts are available now through capsule form or as a tonic. Natural medicines like the Reishi mushroom also have contraindications. It is important to consult with your doctors first before taking any supplements and natural remedies. You may visit for more information regarding Reishi mushrooms and its benefits.
