Occupational Therapy for Special Children
Occupational Therapy greatly helps in treating children with special needs. This therapy aims at improving child’s day to day occupations like self care, play, school activities and other daily activities. It helps in developing child’s cognitive, physical, and motor skills, thereby enhancing his self-confidence and sense of accomplishment. Occupational therapist works closely with special children and they assist in modifying the child’s environment in a way to provide them support and heal them side by side. Also, they educate parents, teachers and others to make the child more comfortable, so that he participates well amongst his peer group and community. Regular and continuous sessions help the child to overcome his frustration and anxiety associated to his learning difficulty. In short, it smoothens and promotes independent functions of a child with special needs in all aspects of his daily life.
Therapeutic activities
The therapeutic activities helps special needs child to fine his sensory and motor skills. Number and length of sessions is designed by occupational therapist keeping in mind unique needs of each child. Therapeutic activities also include fun activities for children.
Self- independent: Occupational therapist work towards making special child more self-independent. They help child master basic daily tasks such as eating, dressing, toileting, bathing and grooming
Playful activity: In order to make special children participate far greater and better, therapist also teach them to be more active in playful activities.
School activity: Children those who have problem adjusting in schools, therapists helps them to adapt regular school life better. Further, they extend their help by collaborating with teachers, special educators, and other school staff. They even provide counseling, and support classroom activities.
Improving motor skills: Occupational therapists also play a major role in helping them improve their fine motor skills and handwriting. They even work in improving the movement large muscles in the arms, and legs better. Movement of the abilities like rolling, crawling, walking, running, jumping, hopping, skipping etc
Occupational therapist work in hospitals/clinics, rehabilitation centre, special schools, private practice etc. These professionals are directly employed within the pediatric department. The children will be referred to them by doctors for assessment and therapy. Therapist aims to enable the child to be as physically, psychologically and socially independent as possible.
