Maintaining Good Oral Health Before and During Pregnancy

By Eddie Storms Subscribe to RSS | February 24th 2012 | Views:

Studies show that gum disease and premature birth are somehow related. However, further studies must be conducted in this area to make the findings more definitive. Whatever the case may be, it appears that gum disease makes biological fluids which may induce labor that therefore raise the risks associated with childbirth. Gum disease, however, is not the only cause of hormonal changes during pregnancy. Diet or nutrition and morning sickness can also trigger these changes.

Women should maintain outstanding oral health through the duration of their pregnancy and pay a visit to their dentists to stop the onset of oral problems that could affect their condition. Listed here are some things women must do and keep in mind to avoid pregnancy complications.

Schedule Dental Appointments. Your dentist can identify and prescribe the necessary treatments for any oral health problems. It is best to have dental checkups on the fourth to sixth months of your pregnancy. The first three months are critical to the unborn child's development, while the last three months may cause you discomfort while you sit on a dental chair. It is highly advised that your dentist also advises your doctor before any treatment begins.

Prevent Extensive Dental Work. Although dental checkups can be safe during pregnancy, extensive dental works including restorative dental procedures are not encouraged. Long procedures would also cause tension on your lower extremities. In addition, despite the low levels of radiation, dental x-rays are also not recommended to avoid any possible complications.

Practice Oral Hygiene at Home. Apart from regular dental checkups, you also must practice good oral hygiene at home. Brush and floss your teeth, especially along the gum line, at least twice a day. Dentists in Atlanta suggest using fluoride toothpaste and a small, soft toothbrush when cleaning your teeth.

Eat Healthy. Because diet or nutrition performs a major role in your overall wellness, you need to be careful about the food you consume. Based on Atlanta dentistry studies, expecting mothers should eat foods loaded in vitamin B12, calcium, and vitamin C to maintain the health of their gums. Expecting mothers should also restrict their consumption of sugary and starchy foods such as fruit juices and soda pops.

On the other hand, morning sickness may cause tooth enamel erosion and bad breath. This is due to the acid produced by vomit. Some experts of dentistry in Atlanta hence advise their clients to use fluoride mouthwash every day and mints with xylitol to stop halitosis and enamel erosion. Another remedy would be to mix water and baking soda to cease the acid attack on your teeth. Regardless of one’s situation, good oral health practices need to be observed during pregnancy and beyond.
