Laser Tattoo Removal Therapy - Laser Types
There are different types lasers that are used for tattoo removal. Of all the lasers used, the Q-switching type is the most popular.
When we talk about Q-switching or Giant Pulse Formation as it is also known, we are simply referring to a technique for generating pulse in lasers so that longer pulse durations, lower pulse repetition rates and higher pulse energies are achieved. With this technique it is possible to achieve much higher pulse energy than would have been possible with continuous wave.
It is actually these that make the Q-switched lasers the best laser type for tattoo removal.
You can also find different types of Q-switched laser. They are all pretty similar, with the main difference being in their wavelengths. The following are three types of Q-switched lasers:
* Q-Switched Ruby Laser - As far as laser tattoo is concerned, this laser is said to have been used first. It has probable the shortest wavelength which is 694nm. This particular laser is effective for removing one of the more difficult to remove tattoo colors which is green.
* Q-Switched Nd:YAG Laser - This laser fully known as the neodymium: yttrium-aluminum-garnet laser is easily the most widely used of the three. This would not be unconnected with the fact that though it originally has a wavelength of 1064nm which is used effectively in the removal of black and dark blue tattoo ink pigment, its wavelength can be reduced to 532nm with a frequency doubling crystal. At this reduced wavelength, it effectively removes red and orange tattoo ink pigments.
* Q-Switched Alexandrite Laser - 755nm is this laser's wavelength. It came on the scene in 1992 and is effective in the removal of green and blue black tattoo ink pigments.
One thing that you must have observed here is that you cannot use one type of laser to remove many different types of tattoo ink. This should then tell you that a credible and ideal clinic should have all the different types of lasers so they can effectively handle tattoos with multiple colors.
There are a few things that are very important in tattoo removal. These are: The skin type and color, ink type and the depth to which the ink was injected, the position of the tattoo etc. You can get hurt if the wrong laser is used on your skin. For this reason, be sure that you laser tattoo removal is handled by qualified personnel.
A specialist would be in a better position to know what type of laser would be ideal for your skin type. There is a need for dark skinned people to exercise more care to avoid skin damage.
It is possible that your tattoo would not be ideal for laser tattoo removal. Such cases may need other methods.
The whole matter therefore rests on finding and working with a specialist who would then guide you through the process.
