As people age, their hearing also becomes gradually impaired, as with their vision. However, there are a number of other disorders that can cause hearing loss. While hearing loss can afflict the aged, it can also cause young people with childhood diseases to suffer. In other cases, otherwise healthy people suffer periodic hearing loss as a result of disease or trauma.

There are three major forms of hearing loss: conductive, sensorineural, and mixed hearing loss. Conductive hearing loss happens because of impairment coming from external causes like dangerous things in the ear, buildup of earwax, or treatable perforated eardrums and benign tumors. Sensorineural hearing loss occurs as a consequence of damage in the auditory nerves or inner ear. Mixed hearing loss is a combination of these two. As an example, an old person who currently has difficulty discerning words might also be going through perforated eardrums.

Otitis media is a disorder categorized as conductive hearing loss. Also known as an ear infection, otitis media typically affects young children, which include babies. Family members may notice an infection when the little one grabs the ear and cries often because of the discomfort. Hearing loss happens when the middle ear gets so painful that sound cannot be transported all the way through to the inner ear.

Sensorineural hearing loss takes place because of injury to the inner ear as well as health problems, head injury, loud noises, and aging. Tinnitus is a notable condition that medical health specialists describe as an indicator of a range of conditions or injuries instead of an illness in itself. Described by sufferers as "ringing in the ears," tinnitus can happen because of long-term exposure to loud sounds, head trauma, or temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ).

Hearing aids are devices that can assist people who have hearing loss hear more clearly. However, hearing aids do not serve as complete treatments for hearing difficulty. A hearing aid captures sounds and enhances the sounds to help the user discern different sounds so s/he can communicate better.

Individuals who need hearing aids need to first talk to their physicians so they can select the appropriate hearing aid. Hearing aid accessories vary based on the fit and use in or on the ear. In addition, an audiologist can help an individual to find a suitable hearing aid with the needed accessories included.

There are hearing aids accessories that are compatible with telephones and mobile phones. These tools help people to hear more clearly and to enhance device features such as volume control, ringer volume modification, and decreased static. Vibrate alerts are offered in many compatible mobile phones. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association has more info on hearing loss and hearing aids at ASHA.org.
