Breast Augmentation Surgery Finding the right type for you

As a breast augmentation surgery candidate, one of the most key decisions that the patient and the doctor have to take is the kind of incision to be made or the type of implant to be used. Breast augmentation procedure in brief involves creating a pocket underneath the breast area covered by muscles and inserting an implant or prosthesis of the desired size and shape and make.

Breast augmentation surgery is preferred by many women these days. There are several reasons for this decision like, displeasure with their shape, loss of breast volume due to pregnancy or weight loss, bring balance to both breasts etc there are many reasons. The choice of the type of surgery for each patient could be distinct.

There are mainly 4 types of incisions done:

• Periareolar Incision: incision is made around the outer areola. This type of incision brings about the slightest visibility for the scar as the incision is made between the dark area of the areola and its surrounding skin. The reported failures are loss of sensation of the nipples (2 to 4%) and unable to breast feed.

• Transaxillary Incision: The incision is made at the armpit and a channel is run from there to the breast. The implant will be placed in this pocket behind the nipples. Though there are fewer scars visible, the chance of unevenness of the implants placed is there.

• Inframammary Incision: The incision is made along the infra mammary fold where the breasts meet the skin in this type of breast augmentation surgery. Though it produces a visible scar, this is considered as the most proficient method of implant placement, as it gives an improved view of the breast tissues and easier to place the implant as well.

• TUBA Incision: Trans-umbilical breast augmentation (TUBA), is a placement method in which the incision is made at the umbilicus (navel) and a channel is created upwards, towards the breast. This is a less common method of breast augmentation surgery used. It creates no visible scar but is more technically difficult to place the implants as its too lengthy path to traverse from the navel to the breast.

Along with the type of incisions made, the type of implant used is also a prime factor for breast augmentation surgery. There are two types of implants mainly:

• Saline implants: The saline implants are filled with sterilized saline solution. The implants can either be pre-filled or inflatable. An incision of very small precise size is made and the empty implant will be placed into the pocket. And then it will be filled with the saline solution. It provides the most natural look among the implants also is less expensive. But still the chances of the implant getting ruptured and leaking are high, so the patient has to undergo replacements several times.

• Silicone Gel Based Implants: Silicones are inert, artificial compounds with an array of forms and uses. The Silicone based implants have a silicone-rubber shell filled with a viscous silicone gel. The chance of the implant rupture is very less and they can be cut and would still retain the shape.

Though these are the various options available, the type of breast augmentation surgery to be chosen can only be decided after consulting with the cosmetic surgeon.
