Bipolar Disorders – Signs to Look out For

Everyone in their lives goes through many ups and downs. Normally the people are able to deal with these changes in a safe manner so that their lives are not changed drastically. However in certain persons the range of these ups and downs may be extreme clinically referred to as mania and Depression. Such persons are said to be suffering from Bi-Polar Disorder. It is a medical condition and a psychiatrist is the best person to diagnose it but there are certain symptoms which can tell us of the lurking danger.

Globally 5 million people get affected by Bipolar disorder every year. It is a very serious condition which can significantly affect a person’s career, interpersonal relations and finances. It causes a major change in a person’s mood, behavior and thinking. The feature distinguishing between bipolar mood swings and ordinary mood swings is the marked obsessive compulsive disorder intensity in case of bipolar disorders which hinders the normal functioning. The cycles of mood swings in Bipolar Disorder can vary from person to person and these may last from days to weeks or months at a stretch. Similarly is the case with the symptoms which also vary from person to person making it very difficult to accurately diagnose the problem. However one should look out for the following signs which are generally found to be common in such patients.

Excessive energy or Euphoria: For someone suffering from this disease, there will come periods of excessive euphoria or elation. This is found to be at odds with the real status of their life and is far removed from reality. A person’s over optimism causes them trouble with their co workers and other family members leading to strains in interpersonal relations.

Grandiose Thinking: In such states a person may feel like a superman or an aristocrat. This increased sense of self worth can lead one to surgical weight loss significant professional, financial as well as legal problems. It is a dangerous state which is easily mistaken by one to be normal and thus becomes difficult to detect.

Hyper active Mind: During Manic periods, the affected person’s mind is full of ideas and racing thoughts. One tends to become incoherent, the thoughts become disconnected, a person tends to get into long speeches and arguments and is thus more and more incomprehensible and irritating. Again this condition is not deemed abnormal by the person concerned and can be detected only by an impartial friend or physician.

Depression: This is the other side of the cycle which is exactly opposite of the Manic phase. The symptoms of this phase are very similar to normal depression such as lack of energy, loss of appetite, sleeplessness and general disinterest in all activities. Many people in this phase experience anxiety, suicidal thoughts and feel guilty over certain issues. The only point of difference here is the irritability which is more pronounced in this case as compared to normal depression.

Although the knowledge of these symptoms is helpful to detect onset of this problem but the varied nature of symptoms as well as the difficulty in acknowledging these by the person experiencing them
