A Guide to Winter Hair Care and Hair Styles

By Treeves Subscribe to RSS | December 19th 2011 | Views:

Hair care is not new to our generation. Some of the earlier references to hair care can be traced to the days, when Egyptians carved combs out of dried fish bones and made shampoos with a mixture of water and citrus juice. Natural oils and animal fats were used to create a thicker substance to coat the cuticle of the hair for the conditioning purposes. Gold dust and dyes were used to color the hair and famous queens like Cleopatra wore jewel ornaments and ivory pins in her hair. Heated iron bars and sticks were used to curl the hair of Assyrian kings and clay based products were used for setting gel. No wonder the modern-day hair care products and treatment are biased from these ancient techniques.

There's nothing worse than a bad hair day. The dry and cold winter weather can wreak havoc on your hair. In the winter, the hair becomes dry, dull and brittle with split ends due to indoor heating and outside cold weather. Winter is a time when hair needs more attention to avoid frizzy dry hair and itchy scalp. To have a healthy hair during this time of the year, it’s very important to take preventive measures to ensure that no damage occurs to hair. Here is an insight on protecting hair from the harsh weather.

A good hair conditioner alters the texture and appearance of hair by giving it an extra shine. Deep conditioning of hair is an ultimate solution to lock moisture as the cold weather sap hair of moisture and make the hair dry. Dry hair is brittle and breaks easily and thus regular conditioning is very essential to avoid brittle hair . Keeping the hair conditioned will help to control static in your hair and also you can dampen your hairbrush before brushing to prevent static electricity.

If you want a natural, organic beauty, free from chemicals you can use home made conditioners to protect your hair. An oil massage to the scalp with a mixture of oils is the best natural conditioner. Massaging warm oil on to the scalp and rinsing with a good shampoo will help avoid dryness in the scalp. A mixture of lemon juice and oil or green tea can be used to avoid itchy and flaky scalp as it is good in antioxidants. A mixture of beer and water can be used as a final rinse for conditioning and also removes residue from hair. Coconut milk is also a natural conditioning agent and can be used as a final rinse. Ultimately, cover your hair with a scarf, hat or cap to avoid the cold winds and a good diet free from cholesterol and fats also aids in giving life to dull and frizzy hair

A good hair style or hair cut can not only make your appearance pleasing but can also treats the damaged ends of the hair. Choose your hair styles according to the type of hair you have. If you have a fine hair with distinguishing softness and more feminine appealing, then a layered style adds beauty by making it look thicker. If your hair texture is course, then get a style that shapes your face as this texture has an overall heavy look. A lengthy blunt cut to the straight shinny hair gives the best impression. Curly Hair is perhaps the most versatile and needs a lot of adjustments with the rollers and blow-dryers to look best.

Whenever I have a slew of questions vying for an expert answer I run those questions by a famous hairstylist and get clarified. Most of my awareness on hair care can be credited to the TV shows by this expert that I watch regularly on my Dish TV. Winter makes your hair to be much more delicate and extra care from choosing the right type of hair products to hair treatment is of utmost importance.
