The Ins-and-Outs of Uninterruptible Power Supply

You must be curious to know that how an uninterruptible power supply works. First of all, let us know the definition of an uninterruptible power supply also known as UPS, that way you will be able to understand things better. Basically, a UPS is a series of batteries working collectively as a team in order to sustain power in any equipment (usually a desktop) during an emergency when the main power is cut off. The main function of a UPS is to protect several critical pieces of equipment from power-related elements like voltage fluctuations, frequency variations, transient disturbances and mechanical failures.

Back to the subject, a UPS also referred to as backup batteries comes in handy in the above situation. The only difference is that, its output is AC rather than DC thus giving the user sufficient time to save his/her works on a computer. However, mark that a UPS is different from a standby power supply. Standby generators are used to supply power when the main line gets disconnected but the generated power is not instantly available for use. It usually takes around 5-10 seconds for the generator to provide stable power.

An uninterrupted power supply is quite useful to address this situation. Normally, you have 5-30 minutes to utilize this power. Hence, it is imperative to have the presence of mind while saving your work. Broadly speaking, an uninterruptible power supply serves as an arbitrator between your equipment and the main supply. The equipment is connected to the UPS which in turn is connected to the principal electrical network. The UPS admits the AC input and then to store it in battery, rectifies it to DC. Whenever there is a power break, this stored power is robotically inverted to AC by the UPS. This is how a UPS works.
