Most computer users know the components of a computer system. However the fact is many of these users don’t know the actual functionality of many parts. Most people know that computers consist of processors, rams, hard drives, optical drives, motherboards, casings, keyboards, mice along with other parts. Use of peripheral devices is something very common however what do those internal parts really do?

The Motherboard is considered to be the most important part of the computer, as they provide platform for other devices to connect and communicate with each other. Motherboards consist of a large number of capacitors, resistors, integrated circuits, slots, connectors and jumpers however it should be noted modern computer motherboards usually now lack jumpers.

Processors are also as important as the motherboard inside the computer. A processor is a small chip with integrated circuits located on the motherboard. The Processor is the crucial component that performs the whole processing for the entire computer. In laymen terms, the processor is the brain of the computer. They are sold as built-in or on chip and separate versions. These components consist of millions of very small components called the logic gates which are actually small circuits. When electricity passes through these circuits, they produce a large amount of heat which increases the resistance of these circuits. The ultimate result of this heat is diminution in the overall performance of the computer. To prevent the heat from causing total havoc, all motherboards are provided with heat sinks and cooling fans.

Cooling fans get power from the motherboard and are almost always mounted on the heat sinks of the processors. Their basic function is to perform the job of ventilating the air through the heat sinks to keep them cool. Some expansion cards like VGA card, sound card or some other cards have their own processors and thus have their own cooling fans too. All expansion cards are put into the expansion slots which are parts of the motherboards. Not only the do processors need cooling fans, all parts of the computer that heat up extensively need cooling fans to insure that the computer functions properly and to its optimal capacity.

Power supplies are one of the best examples in insuring the computer is functioning to its optimal capacity. Power supplies basically provide the DC power to the motherboards and distribute to different parts of the computer. During conversion from AC to DC, a large amount of heat is produced and if this heat is not eradicated, the coils of the power supplies become prone to burning. A cooling fan is extremely important to be attached to the power supply to prevent any damage to the computer itself.

Since a mother board is the central part of every computer where every device that is not the part of the motherboard gets connected with other devices through allocated slots for all such devices. Most of the slots for peripheral devices are mounted at the back of the motherboard. These slots are just like sockets where the connectors of peripheral devices are plugged in and get connected. In the past, there were separate ports for a particular category of devices but as time passed on, more and more devices were invented, it became impossible to provide a separate slot for these devices. For this purpose, USB ports were provided which are meant to connect all types of devices with the computer regardless of their nature.
