A Closer Look at the Capacity and Reliability of AIT-5 Backup Tape and Other Competing Half-Inch Tape Formats

Pressures of long term reliability, stringent data retention laws, slim I.T budgets, fast data access and improved business response time have data administrators clamoring for new smarter, robust and most importantly, compact backup systems. No other tape-based system in small to midrange segment can surpass the Sony’s world-renowned AIT (Advanced Intelligent Tape) technology. It is the most compact solution that can compress data at a higher rate than its competitors. AIT drives are designed to compress data at a ratio of 2.6 to 1, which is higher than rival systems’ 2 to 1.

AIT5 solution can be seamlessly integrated into a broader array of workstations, midrange backup environments, branch offices, enterprise networks, public organizations and small data centers. Furthermore, it has been ideally designed for automated data backups. SDX5-400C is the part number of the industry’s most compact cartridge that can record 400 gigabytes of un-compressed data. It’s not surprise that this tape has been engineered by Sony, because it is the industry-leading tape media company that delivers innovative and new breakthrough backup technologies. SDX5-400C tape is based on the AIT-5 technology.

If we compare it with its rivals like DLT tape, LTO 3 media tape or other half-inch tape cartridges, the Sony AIT5 tape is clearly the winner because its cartridge size is almost 33-34% smaller than these tapes. As the data-center space is shrinking and the data volumes are increasing, AIT5 system has become the foremost choice for backup storage. Thanks to increased data compression, a massive amount of 1.04 TB compressed data can be reliably squeezed onto AIT5 cartridge. The rival tapes can only double their native recording capacity with compressed data. Therefore, Sony AIT5 tapes not only occupy less storage space, but also deliver greater storage capacity that is perfect for the businesses with increasing backup needs. Sony is also a popular brand of LTO3 tape, which has the part number LTX400G.

AIT 5 drive models developed by Sony are AITe1040SBK (external drive) and AITi1040S (internal drive). So the AIT5 drives can be connected to variety of computing systems without any hassle, and the IT managers can satisfy the demands of data-intensive IT centers at a low cost. In addition, the backup speed of AIT 5 drives is also very impressive. They can record the data files at a high speed of 24 Mbps.

Sony AIT5 drives feature a breakthrough “dynamic tracking head” technology that delivers superior reliability, reduces tape deterioration and ensures longer life expectancy. Furthermore, Sony has used finer cobalt magnetic particles and durable media coating technology that have helped to create a stronger and smoother tape reel. It can seamlessly travel through the tape drive, and can withstand up to 30000 tape passes. So the media replacement cost reduces significantly, and the value-conscious customers can enjoy the benefits of long term reliability.

Sony AIT5 solution provides SMB customers a much more economical, durable and space efficient backup system that extends your previous AIT investments and features super fast speed and ample capacity to address the growing demands.
