If you’re all excited about creating your very first garden, hold that shovel for the moment. It’s great if you feel all set, but there are certain things you have to remember before you get yourself all covered with dirt. Don’t worry, you’ll find gardening easy and enjoyable if you follow these simple steps.

Make a garden plan

If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Gardening seems easy but you can get overwhelmed by a thousand and one concerns as you go along. Have a garden plan before you start. Know exactly what garden style or theme you like, what plants you want, what need to be removed from your yard, and what gardening tools you need. If you plan to have a small garden, then you need only a few plants that are easy to care for and a small amount of soil.

Know the basics of gardening

Like many things, the challenge lies in knowing the basics. Learn basic gardening skills and methods such as how to prepare the soil before planting, where to position the plants in your garden, how to water your plants, and the proper care of your plants. Make a checklist of these basics to keep gardening organized.

Buy basic garden tools

Buy the gardening tools you need for a more efficient work. Basic gardening tools include the garden shovel, clippers, gloves and hose. Of course, get the plants and flowers you want to have in your garden. Don’t worry about the more fancy stuff like an arbor or fountain. You can get these in the future when your garden is lush and healthy.

Get down and dirty

Remember that bit about planning ahead? Now comes the fun part. Carry out your plan by setting the soil, planting the seeds, placing grown plants if you prefer them, and watering your plants. In short, get down and follow your gardening idea to the letter!

Read or ask around

If you feel ready to do more after creating your basic garden, you can add other plants like orchids and herbs, or place decors like garden lights and a bird bath. Or ask any local expert to give you more gardening tips for beginners so you can grow healthy plants and keep your garden green.

Remember: Plan ahead and know the gardening basics, buy only what you need, and then get started. The sooner you begin, the sooner you’ll have the garden you’ve always wanted. Read more about gardening tips for beginners from Dummies.com and EzineArticles.com.
