Scoliosis is the most common deformity of the spine. It is subject to the abnormal curvature of the spines resulting in severe scoliosis pain. There are many reasons why these deformities come about and it can happen to any person of any age group. Depending on the age of the patient, it can be categorized as:

• Infantile scoliosis (birth to 3 years)

• Juvenile scoliosis (3 years to puberty)

• Adolescent scoliosis (at or just after puberty)

• Adult Scoliosis (over age 20)

Although this disease is most commonly found among growing girls who undergo puberty, anybody who experiences physical weakness, weakness of the bones or anybody who have been through an accident, scoliosis can happen to a person of any age group. The development of the abnormality of the vertebrae can cause congenital scoliosis. It happens when the bones of the spine fail to develop normally.

Another kind of scoliosis is non-structural when there is a problem with another part of the body that can cause the abnormal curvature of the spine. For example, an incongruity in leg length can cause the spine to curve to one side. Muscle spasms and inflammation may also cause this problem.

Therefore, it is important to be aware of the initial symptoms of Scoliosis, so that it could be treated at the initial stage. The best way to get an effective scoliosis treatment is to find the extent of scoliosis affecting your body which can only be determined through some tests including X-Rays and bone marrow test. Depending upon the extent, the treatment for scoliosis can be performed by the scoliosis specialist.

There are three basic scoliosis treatments which can bring back the normal curvature of your spine and body. They are:

• Observation- patients are observed to find the extent of the curvature which can be diagnosed through the age of the patient, the stage of the skeletal development and the degrees of the curvature which should be between 20-30 degrees. After the observation, the scoliosis specialist will suggest a more aggressive scoliosis treatment done by the scoliosis specialist in every six months until normal curvature of the spine is attained.

• Scoliosis Bracing- braces are used to control the further curving of the spine. But sometimes, due to the extent of the scoliosis, braces will not be able to treat certain deformities of the spine. Therefore, bracing is always recommended at the initial stage of the scoliosis when the degree of the curvature is less.

• Scoliosis Surgery- this is the last option for the scoliosis treatment. It is done when the extent of the curvature is already severe. Depending on the site of the curve and the degree of the curvature, the surgeon will fuse the vertebrae in a more normal anatomic position.
