What is an HVAC technician?

The straight-forward answer is that an HVAC technician is a professional who works in the field of HVAC, which stands for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. In general, HVAC technicians may work as independent contractors or as employees for companies that specialize in air conditioning systems and heating systems repair. Like most other professions that work with complex and delicate systems, HVAC technicians have to go through years of education, additional testing and an apprenticeship before they become certified. In the United States, a person interested in pursuing a career as an HVAC technician can get started at a trade school or a program offered by a community college. These programs typically take between two to four years to finish. After graduation, the aspired HVAC technician is required to pass additional tests before the certification is awarded.

What does an HVAC technician do?

As an expert regarding any heating, ventilation and air conditioning system, an HVAC technician is responsible for the installation, repair and routine maintenance of these systems. In addition to the installation and heating systems repair, HVAC technicians are also proficient in reading and producing blueprints. Because of this proficiency, they are typically involved in the planning and preparation before the installation. When required, they also work as consultants for home owners and business developers. HVAC technicians act as the authoritative figures who ensure that the system is in compliance with local regulations and that the temperature of a commercial building is within the range of set values that is considered legal.

In terms of the maintenance of existing air conditioning systems, the HVAC technicians are mainly responsible for inspecting every single component of the system. While performing routine checks, these technicians have to follow specific guidelines to ensure that individual components of the system are operating at or above the standard operating level. When a problem is encountered, then the technicians have to adjust, repair or replace parts of the system accordingly.

In conclusion, an HVAC technician essentially does everything around a HVAC system. As home owners and business developers are always installing and replacing air conditioning systems in all parts of the country, the demand for competent HVAC technicians is still strong under the current economic climate. With the right resources, individuals who are crafty with tools and good at operating complex mechanical equipments can enter this niche market by enrolling in a local program.
