An increased focus on going green and finding ways to use energy efficient technologies to heat and cool homes and businesses has increased the demand for HVAC professionals. In the San Diego area, these services are in high demand. HVAC refers to heating, ventilation and air conditioning. HVAC technicians install, repair and maintain these types of systems. Training or a certificate to learn the skills of an HVAC technician can lead into this exciting career. Attending a San Diego HVAC school generally requires about one year of studies to earn a diploma or certificate. A San Diego AC College can lead to an associate’s degree in HVAC after two years of education.

HVAC Training and Education

Attending a San Diego AC School combines classroom and practical training. Classroom training includes computer applications, mechanical drawing, blue print reading, as well as applied physics and electronics. Practical training includes installation and repair of different HVAC systems, as well as basic plumbing and electronics training. Attending a San Diego HVAC college provides more advanced training to obtain an associate’s degree. This includes how temperature control mechanisms work and HVAC equipment design to understand their inner-workings. Many schools and colleges also prepare students to obtain recognized credentials for HVAC technicians such as the HVAC Excellence and NATE credentials.

Work of HVAC Technicians

HVAC technicians install equipment such as furnaces, central air conditioning units, as well as the electrical thermostats that control these systems. Some install the vents, air ducts and related equipment required to properly control and distribute heat and cold air. They use a variety of tools and electrical equipment to install the units. After installation, they test the equipment to ensure it functions properly. They test for potential hazards such as carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, and ensure appropriate oxygen and humidity levels are maintained in the home or business the equipment is installed in. Employers that offer HVAC services also provide customers with service contracts to maintain the systems. HVAC technicians also perform the maintenance on these systems on a routine basis. HVAC technicians earn an average salary of $52,000 per year or $25 per hour in the San Diego area, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Salaries in the San Diego metropolitan area are among the highest salaries in the country. Because many of these professionals are required to be on-call for emergencies, they also earn “on-call” and overtime wages, which can also increase the yearly income of an HVAC technician.
