How Parents can stop their Kids from Lying
It is an age old story that our moms and grand moms used to tell us when we were kids. Once there was a shepherd in a village. Every day the shepherd used to go to the green grass land near the village river to feed his cattle. There were other shepherds also who went to that place for the same reason. One day an evil idea came into a shepherd’s mind and he thought of frightening the other shepherd. In the afternoon, when everyone was busy having their lunch, the shepherd started screaming “please help me! The tiger has come to eat me”. Hearing his loud screams, the other shepherds came to rescue him from the danger; but they found that it was the silly trick of the shepherd. It gave the shepherd immense pleasure that he succeeded in making the other shepherds fall for his trick and he continued to do the same every day.
One day, the shepherd was sitting alone in a big stone in the green land while everyone was busy playing games near the river. Suddenly a tiger came and the shepherd started to scream. The other people, who were present nearby, thought that it was again a silly trick of the shepherd; so they didn’t go to help him. The shepherd started running from the tiger to save his life but couldn’t do so because ultimately the tiger caught him.
Kids are the most affection loving human beings in this world. We see the shadow of God in them. Their innocent smile brings the breeze of happiness in the parents’ and grandparents’ life. Being parents, we never want our children to be unhappy. We try to provide them all comfort and pleasure of this world. We never expect that our children can also tell lie to us; but kids sometime become the most frequent liars. There are various reasons for which a child lies; but whatever may be the reason, this habit among kids should be stopped in an early age so that it should not continue in the later life. There are some cautions that we adults need to take while nurturing our kids so that they can develop good habits. The following are some of the tips that parents and teachers can follow to nurture good habits among kids:-
1-Bedtime moral story is a great way of teaching kids about the importance of telling the truth. These stories easily convey the message to the listener and thus has a great impact on the kids
2-Parents should never accept the excuses that their child gives after telling a lie. If parents do so then it turns out to be a habit among kids
3-Children often lie to keep their parents or teachers happy, they need to know that you value the truth much more than a small act of misbehavior
4-Praise the truth! Catch them telling the truth at a time when you know they would like to sugar coat a situation
Never forget that ALL children need to know you care about them and that they can contribute in a positive way. It took the child a long time to become a master of distorting the truth, exaggerating, lying chronically, be consistent, patient and understand that change will take time.
