Choose a Master’s Degree in Public Affairs

A degree in public affairs gives graduates the opportunity to work on policies intended to have a positive impact on the good of the public. Due to the complexities and demands of public affairs careers, proper education is essential, and in order to increase career possibilities and potential, a Master’s degree is recommended.

In order to obtain the best education possible, individuals who are interested in public affairs should pursue their degree at an institution that is consistently recognized as having one of the top public affairs programs in the world. Through a curriculum based on an interdisciplinary approach, students will study all areas invested in the public good such healthcare and the public sector in order to learn ways to develop and implement successful policies. Courses in the curriculum include public management, non-profit management, policy analysis, economics, information systems, and courses on specific policies. Students who are interested in a Master’s degree in public affairs often complete their program on a standard two-year track. However, under certain conditions, qualified students may have the option to pursue an accelerated three-semester track. This option is strictly reserved for individuals who have extensive, relevant professional experience. A three-semester track begins in the fall and allows qualified candidates to complete an intense, challenging program in just 16 months and 168 credit units. Students must pass with a 3.0 GPA. The core curriculum focuses on policy analysis, finance, management, political science, project application, and technology and management.

For those who enter into a traditional two year program, the curriculum will focus on tools – both analytic and quantitative - communication skills, and management skills. Students are required to complete 198 credit units with a cumulative GPA of 3.0.

With a Master’s degree in public affairs, graduates can find jobs at the local, state, and federal level to develop and implement policies. A Master’s degree will qualify graduates for directorial, managerial, and senior level positions, and jobs can be found in both governmental and non-governmental organizations that work to enhance the public good.
