What is a historical thesis?

Every student that is doing masters has to face the challenge of writing a history dissertation. It is a project of research in which a student chooses a topic of his interest and researches on it and then compiles his research in a systematic order in the form of a book. The purpose is to assess the general knowledge of a student in the subject he has chosen, and his abilities of researching. If the student passes the paper, he is allowed to pursue a career in that subject. Otherwise he is asked to change course of study and change his topic.

A historical thesis is a very intricate project. It is the study of humanity’s past, all the events that have occurred and recorded. You will need some instructions to help you through.

1.Timetable

Only by planning your workload effectively from the beginning you can complete your project on time. Make a check list of all the tasks that you have to perform, and keep track of time. Keep some time in the end so that you can revise your work for any flaws.

2.Choosing a topic

This is, in fact, the most difficult of tasks. As you cannot change your topic once you have begun with your thesis, it is better that you choose a topic of your interest that can drag you till the end. A topic can be extracted from one of your modules or courses that you have taken in your 1st or 2nd year.

Remember, the topic should be very specific and clear. It should cover only one aspect of the subject. You can answer only one question in your paper, so your topic should strictly relate to your research question.

As your research is on human past events, your topic should contain dates or era on which you are investigating, along with the event you are focusing on.

3.Using primary and secondary sources

Primary sources of historical information are those sources that were produced when the event occurred.

Secondary sources of information comprises of all the subsequent newspaper articles, databases, journals, web-sites, etc.

4.Chapters

A thesis usually includes the following chapters:

Title page

Page of contents

Acknowledgment

Abstract

Introduction

Main body

Conclusion

Bibliography

5.Presentation

Your institute will provide you with certain standards of presenting your data. You should strictly follow those standards. Moreover, present your data in such a way that it is readable and understandable to the audience. It should not contain any vague ideas.

6.Rules and regulations

Your institute will provide you with rules referring your paper. They usually are as follows:

Word limit: you should not exceed the word limit of 8,000 10,000 words.

Number of pages
