How to Kill Schizophrenia with Love and Compassion

By Treeves Subscribe to RSS | January 11th 2012 | Views:

What is the definition of the word "understanding"? We all think that we are very understanding and kind to each other and especially to people suffering from mental disorders. We say that to ourselves but how many of us are really considerate and patient towards someone with a mental disorder? In this article we will be making an effort to implement this quality in action. This article will focus on schizophrenia and I hope by the end of this article you have an understanding of what it means and what you can do to help people suffering from this disease.

Well to begin with, schizophrenia is a psychotic disorder where the person affected will isolate himself from the environment and there will be disorientation in the way he functions his day to day life. It changes the way he thinks, acts and sees the world. His personality disintegrates and he will have difficulty in coordinating his thoughts, behavior and action. He develops delusions and hallucinations. He will be living in an entirely different world of his own following an entirely different logic. The person will withdraw himself from reality and develops an illogical pattern of thinking. For instance, When he looks at fire, he might feel that some major disaster is about to occur in his life. When he listens to the sound of a truck or van, he might sense danger and will feel that someone is waiting to take him in the truck to harm him or to ruin his life. He will even have the feeling that everyone in the world is against him and that he is an evil force so, people consider him as dangerous living being. When you talk to a person affected with schizophrenia he will look for signs in your body language and conclude an entirely different meaning exactly opposite of what you are trying to convey.

To him whatever you speak doesn't matter, he will see you as God or a messenger from God who is trying to put an end to the atrocities he has committed. For a normal person who leads his life peacefully, it will be like a jolt from the blue to get transformed into some evil force all of a sudden. He will feel stressed and wonder why his life has taken such a big turn and why has he been chosen as the ultimate evil force on earth. Some people experience feelings similar to sexual harassment. This means they feel sexually harassed when they merely talk with a normal person or when they look at certain objects. The worst part is that you will never be able to convince him that what he is thinking is just not true. Real life incidents and hallucinations get mixed in his life making him exposed to extreme levels of stress. This is the life of a person suffering from schizophrenia. But again every person has different feelings so different patients may develop different kinds of illusions. What I have described is just way one patient had experienced. So how can you help such a person?

Schizophrenia is associated with unusual imbalance of chemical messengers between nerve cells. It is called dopamine. Identifying the cause for the disease is very difficult. It can occur because of the interaction of several physical, genetic, psychological and environmental factors. People suffering from schizophrenia believe that someone is reading their mind that their life is an open book for everyone to read and control. So is there a cure for the disease? The answer is yes. The disease can be managed by medications and psychotherapy. I recently watched a movie about schizophrenia that was aired on TV through Dish TV Offers that I got and I was moved. But there is one thing that can bring about changes in the misfortunate lives of people affected by this condition. It is unconditional love, patience and understanding. So the next time you meet someone affected, you know what to do right?
