Extremadura region has Badajoz and Caceres as the provinces and Merida is the capital of the region. The capital has Roman ruins which are fantastic and worth visiting while on holiday or vacation in this Spanish region. This capital was a very important center for the Romans and it is therefore not a wonder that most of the region’s history is preserved here.

The one thing that stands out in Extremadura is the varying landscapes. From the mountain ranges to the plains and even the fertile valleys near the Guadiana and Tajo Rivers. The climate of this region is much continental consisting of warm summers and very cold winters. Tourist activities are experienced mostly during the warm months as they open up great opportunities for great fun and leisure.

Even though this region is yet to experience mass tourism, those who find their way here find much to enjoy and there is also lots to discover and explore within the region. You will find several preserves and natural parks most of which are within the beautiful valleys where the rivers of the region pass hence making it an essential ecological area. Other interesting things within Extremadura are the traditions and customs which are very popular.

You will also find ceramic works, metal work as well as embroideries very interesting. The gastronomy is also delicious and made up of sausages, game, trout and cheeses not forgetting high quality wines to take it all down. You cannot afford to miss out on the cities found within this region as each has something interesting to offer to visitors.

Merida: you will find beautiful Roman monuments preserved here among them amphitheater, colossal theater, a bridge and Roman Art Museum which has valuable collection. There are also two aqueducts which cannot be missed while here.

Caceres: it is the capital of the upper part of the region and has plenty to offer. The old quarter, town walls of Moorish origin and the watch towers on the walls are some of the major attractions here. You will also find the Renaissance palaces to be very impressive.

Trujillo: it is most popular because of the main square which has outstanding beauty as well as the fact that is where Pizarro the great conqueror was born. Well preserved town walls and medieval castles are some other highlights that you will find interesting.

Other towns you cannot miss in Extremadura include Plasencia, Guadalupe and Badajoz. They are home to beautiful historical monuments.
