Many specialties of this place have made it a favorite tourist destination. The word Kovalam also stands for “groove of coconut trees”. The place is also called as “paradise of South India”. Well known for its beauty it is also renowned for spa and Ayurvedic treatment services in the hotels and private resorts. One of the attractions is its beautiful sunset. Every sunset experience is new and different. The photographers from all around the world are drawn to capture the amazing view of sunset.

Kovalam has three beautiful adjacent crescent beaches which makes diverse activities possible such as swimming, sunbathing, herbal body toning massages, special cultural programs, Catamaran cruising etc.

The three beaches of Kovalam-

1. Lighthouse Beach- The largest beach and is situated southernmost. A lighthouse of British era is situated at this beach so the name.

2. Hawah Beach – This is situated in the middle part of beach and famous for calm bay of blue waters. This is in a semi circular shape. It is a place for fun filled family vacations.

3. Samudra beach – Northern most part of the Kovalam beach. This is a quiet beach and ideal for sunbathing and lazing out.

The facilities for tourists are managed very well. There are many private luxury beach resorts in and around Kovalam. They provide 5 star luxury accommodations, elegant sea view rooms, Ayurveda wellness therapies, Yoga, martial arts etc.

Some of the main attractions in and around Kovalam are -

Karamana River and Boating – Twelve kilometers from Kovalam, this river offers spectacular views of backwaters and greenery. The Thiruvallam boat club on the bank of this river offers cruises, kayaking, canoe rides and houseboat cruises.

Vellayani Lake – This freshwater lake looks enchanting during the moonlight. World famous annual boat race during Onam festival gets organized here.

Valiyathura Pier – It literally means “Big Fort” and presents excellent views of setting sun.

Edakallu – Popular sunset viewing point between Lighthouse & Hawah beaches.

Kovalam Art Gallery – The famous Kovalam art Gallery displays artifacts, paintings and artworks of ancient Indian culture. Art lovers from around the world visit here.

Vizhinjam Rock Cut Cave Temple – This temple has rock cut sculptures of 18th century. Incomplete sculptures of Lord Shiva and Parvathy are major attractions of this temple.

Aruvikkara Dam – Located at ten kilometers from Kovalam, it is one of the famous picnic spots.
