mary fedden was born in August 14, 1915 in Bristol. She is a well-known British artist. She studied at the Slade School of Fine Arts, London from 1932 to 1936 from the age of sixteen. Afterwards, she returned to Bristol where she taught until the Second World War broke out. In 1944, she was sent as a driver for the Army, Navy and Air force institutes. She developed her own style of flower painting and still lifes after the war was over. After leaving college, she made a living teaching, painting portraits and producing stage designs for Saddlers Wells and Arts Theatre. Her work reminds a person of artists like Matisse and Braque.

Marriage:

mary fedden london In 1951, she married artist Julian Trevelyan. They met before the war. After marriage, they took a studio on the river Thames at Chiswick. She then started teaching art in the Royal College of Art from 1958 to 1964 being the first lady tutor to teach in that school. Among her pupils are David Hockney and Allen Jones. She later on taught at the Yehudi Menuhin School at Cobham in Surrey from 1965 to 1970.

Styles and Influences:

In 1995 in an interview with the Artist Magazine, she admitted that she floated from influence to influence. She was fascinated by Ben Nicholson’s early paintings of his wife, Winifred. She also admired the Scottish artist Anne Redpath and French painter Henri Hayden. She executed her subjects in bold and vivid style with contrasting styles. However, her work of 2005-6 uses a narrow tonal range. Her still lifes are often placed in front of a landscape and she enjoys contrasting of disparate and even quirky elements. When using watercolors, she emphasizes the rough texture of her favorite Indian papers.

Exhibitions:

The Portland Gallery represents her. Her exhibitions have been held in Redfern Gallery, New Graften Gallery, Harmet Gallery and many more. She received the O.B.E. and an honorary from the University of Durham. Now in her nineties she remains a prolific and popular painter.
