The Balearic Islands are a cluster of islands where Menorca is one of the larger islands in this cluster. Menorca is in fact the second Balearic Island after Mallorca. Menorca is an idyllic island which is very relaxing as a tourist destination for those who want solace and tranquility in their holiday. It is an ideal location to unwind and hide away from the busy urban life for a couple of days.

Origin

Menorca stems from an ancient Latin term referring to “minor” as it is a smaller island than Mallorca. Although it is barely 32 miles long and 9 miles wide, its beaches are superb with soft fine sand and many quiet and natural bays.

Menorca is divided into the North and South sections. North Menorca spots more ruggedness in its landscapes while its South spots more green and ancient stone walls across the vast fields. There are intriguing sites that are purportedly Bronze Age eras across Menorca with the findings of tailaiots or navetes; these ancient stone monuments appear in the form of upturned boats.

Town offerings

One of Menorca’s interesting towns is Ciutadella. This quaint town is located on the far east of Menorca. Its best attractions are the beautiful and secluded bays which allow visitors to explore and relax without intrusion from others. There are many pleasant bays to check out; these include Cala en Blanes, Cala en Brut, Cala Forcat, Cala Blanca and Cala Santandria where ‘Cala’ means ‘bay’.

Besides the lovely bays at Ciutadella, one can also visit many small palaces from the 17th century as well as the 18th century; these include Casa Saura, Barón de Lluriach palace and Martorell palace.

Seis Voltes is an interesting village to visit while in Menorca as there are beautiful alleys to stroll along with uniquely decorated arcades; its houses have typical Mediterranean styled white-washed walls with blooms of colorful flowers.

Churches are very common in Menorca stemming from its rich history of conquerors from various cultures with the Christian Re-conquest being the final authority. Hence, many old cultural monuments were rebuilt with Christian emblems such as churches, monasteries and palaces. Some of the remarkable churches were built between 16th and 19th centuries like the Iglesia de San Francisco and Iglesia del Roser.

Naveta des Tudoms refers to the island’s pre-historical tomb that has become a renowned landmark on the island. It draws many visitors to view the past culture and monuments that still exist today in Menorca.
