If you own or work for a company, chances are that there will be company files that are sensitive in nature. One example of sensitive files is files that have personal information connected to customers.

If you don’t get on shredding these files, then the personal and private information of customers could be in jeopardy. Many contact information files of customers in companies have direct info regarding their home address, phone number, and other information that could be pretty dangerous for anyone else to have access to.

In extreme circumstances, failing to go through with proper shredding procedures could lead to people finding the data in the trash, or simply taking it if they happen to be in the building, such as often happens with janitors and other non-salaried workers.

Anyone who had the information could sue it for bad purposes, like showing up at the customer’s house. In some cases, there will actually be information like credit card numbers, bank account numbers, and other private financial information that someone could actually use to steal money from your customers.

Legality

If it comes out down the road that you failed to properly take care of shredding private information for customers, and it leads to problems like the theft of money, it’s possible you could actually be liable for any damages that occur as a result, including any kind of theft, or any kind of other property damage or loss, or damage from anything else occurring.

There are often legal considerations when it comes to taking personal documents from clients to begin with. Many organizations may require the shredding of these documents in various situations, such as after a certain amount of time, or after the business moves out of the building, or during the process of transferring the documents over to a new system like a digital system.

It’s a good idea to check the legal language in any kind of agreement that you might have with consumers in general, since the shredding of these documents might be legally binding.

General Reasons for Shredding

This is all besides the fact that shredding documents is just a good idea in general. You never know who will end up having access to certain documents in situations where you really don’t want that to happen. For example, many different companies compete in the same markets for a certain share in the demographics, selling the same kind of service or product to consumers, for example.

In these cases, shredding documents that have sensitive information regarding market or corporate strategy in a particular area could be quite a good idea, since if these fell into the wrong hands, it could be a major problem.

Having a strong idea what a corporate opponent is going to do over the next few months or years will be bad news for the company. It means that the opposing company would know how to undersell them, or out maneuver them in regards to whatever the original plan was.
