How to Prepare Successfully for an Interview

By Ashley Carron Subscribe to RSS | January 10th 2012 | Views:

Getting an Advantage:

Very often there is very little difference between candidates at an interview, so the one that does the best preparation may be the one who differentiates himself or herself from the rest and gains an advantage that could lead to a job offer. Too many people go to interviews unprepared and companies don’t like people who don’t prepare.

So, how can you prepare best for an interview?

The Company:

Firstly, you should find out something about a company. With the internet this is very easy to do nowadays. You should look at the company website to find out what the company does. You should look to see what awards or achievements that the company have had. They may have won an award or they may be the top company in their sector – or maybe even their share price has soared in recent months. Bringing the company’s successes up at an interview will reflect positively on you.

Secondly, you should find out which skills that you have that the company are most interested in and hone up on those skills. The agency or ad will have already told you what skills are needed but they may value some of your skills more than others and you should put more prominence on whatever they are most looking for. You can find this out from the agency, your umbrella company or the company itself. There are some interviewers who try and trick those at interview by asking obscure questions in an area you wouldn’t normally use in your daily business. However, if you can find some internet tests on your skill you have an opportunity to broaden your knowledge and to answer even the obscure questions. That would impress them.

Thirdly, find out what parts of your experience are most important to them. It may be a subset of your experience that they are most interested in. Find out precisely what they are looking for and then hone in on that area looking at old notes and going over in your mind what you did when you used that part of your experience.

The People:

Fourthly, try and find out what kind of people those interviewing you are. The agent that you are going through may have a relationship with the people at the company and may have taken one or more of them out to lunch or even socialised with them. If you are with one of those Contractor Umbrella Companies they may have other people at the company and know the managers there. You need to know what kind of people they are and what their interests are. If you have a common interest with one or more of them that could give you an advantage and at the very least give you something to talk about at the interview.

Break the Ice- It could help break the ice.

Try to bring it up as early as possible at the interview as so many interviews are got in the first two minutes or some even say 30 seconds. You could bring it up on the way to the interview room with your interviewer. “I hear you like sailing” or “I hear you are a Manchester United fan” could make them look kindly on you in those first early seconds of the interview. When there is little between candidates the more preparation you have done beforehand may just be crucial as to whether you get the job or not. Preparation is so important.
