Hindoo – the Great Thoroughbred Who Never Unplaced!
Over the time, horse racing has evolved from a pure horse racing event which implemented very basic methods of equine-care and focussed primarily on the thrill, into a more sophisticated sport which now has acquired a status where horses are treated with state of the art care and facilities, good layoffs and even retirement. So much that the renowned trainer James Rowe even quit working for the famous owners, the Dwyer Brothers in protest of the over-racing of the then excelling race-mare Miss Woodward. Compare that with the times now, race horses are treated with much more concern and care.
It’s about that same time, the 1980s when Hindoo was foaled. Sired by a great sire of Derby winners, Virgil and dam Florence, Hindoo was a horse with great racing skills, so much that he never finished out of money in his entire career of 35 starts. He won 30 races in all with 3 seconds and 2 thirds in his racing tenure from 1980 to 1982. Trained by Rowe, Hindoo never disheartened hi fans nor ever disregarded his jockey’s directions; if the jockey asked, Hindoo delivered.
As a two year old, Hindoo started nine times winning seven of them. The other two, he finished third by a length at the Windsor Hotel Stakes and in another he finished second again by a length. Hindoo ran an array of impressive graded stake races starting from Colt and Filly Stakes to Juvenile Stakes and the Jockey Club Stakes. A clean win presided over all these races; he had skilfully won the six furlong Criterion Stakes and also the mile long Tremont. Hindoo was setting a tall order for all contemporaries. It was only towards the end of his two year old season that the Dwyer Brothers had invested in this emerging champion colt. The season ended with an American Championship for two year olds award.
In his third year old season, Hindoo won the Derby, the Clark Handicap Travers Stakes and also the Lorillard Stakes. He was the handicap favourite, a calm and manageable horse that exhibited excellence however hard he was pushed. He went on a continual winning spree for 18 consecutive races that included the Kentucky Derby against another impressive racehorse Lexex. The last two of his twenty starts that year finished in the money but not at pole. That year, Hindoo also won the mile and a half stake race, the Blue Ribbon Stakes which proving his potential on a variety of distances starting 6 furlongs to 10.
Hindoo was fairly compared to two great racehorses of his time, Sir Hugh and Crickmore. Even though he had defeated Crickmore in a handful of races during the second season, he lost both the match races against him. However the two held against Sir Hugh were cleanly won, sweep stake. Hindoo was again the American Champion Race Horse for the year.
The four year old season for this incredible racehorse comprised of five wins from six starts. He had finished second in his last race. Hindoo ran some extraordinary distances as an older horse, capturing 2 ¼ miles at the Louisville Cup and the Coney Island Cup. Once retired to stud, he foaled the great racehorse and sire of his times, Hanover.
