Managed Hosting service is a certain type of online hosting service that allows the clients an opportunity to lease a complete server without sharing it with anyone else. This type of a hosting service is more flexible when compared to Shared Hosting concept. They are often referred to as dedicated hosting services. In managed hosting Service, clients have complete control over the leased server that includes choice of hardware to be used, operating system, etc. Hosting company can provide the server administrative service as add-on. In certain cases, dedicated server can offer larger return and less overhead on investment.

Managed hosting servers are mostly housed in a data center. The concept is very similar to Colocation, providing HVAC systems and redundant power sources. However, there are some differences with Colocation facility. Here, server hardware is totally owned by provider. For certain cases, they will provide the necessary support for application and operating system.

Dedicated hosting service providers normally utilize highest level of security measures for data storage purpose on network of their servers. In most common circumstances, the providers will deploy different software tools for scanning of network and systems. This is done to check whether there are any obtrusive invaders, hackers, spammers, or some harmful problems like worms, crashes, and Trojans in the system. For security and protection purpose, there are different software programs being used by Windows and Linux. There are five different type of management support available from dedicated server hosting providers. These are fully managed, managed, self managed, and unmanaged.

Dedicated hosting providers usually define their management level based on services they offer. When talking about administrative maintenance of OS, then services provided by this type of a server provider includes security patches, daemon updates, and upgrades. Some of the different management level tasks include daemon configuration, custom programming, adding users, and domains.
