Effective classroom communication is an important tool for classroom management. Good communication not only results in skillful teaching but also helps in strengthening student-teacher bond. Regular interaction and discussion fastens student’s comprehending skills and creates an atmosphere where most effective learning can take place.

Ways to Foster Dialogue with Students

• Questioning technique is the most common method by which a teacher can initiate a dialogue with students. By asking questions, educator can come to know about learner's understanding of the subject.

• A teacher can also ask students to write their point of view and share it with other students in the class.

• Encouraging students to indulge into small group discussions also helps.

• It is also important to explain to the students’ importance of verbalizing their knowledge and things that they have understood in class i.e. verbalizing what you know. It will help them to learn more efficiently.

• Debate is another way through which teachers can provide opportunity to students to practice their communication skills. As per studies, debate aids in stimulating different types of responses, helps students to develop convincing arguments. Also, allows teachers and students to learn more from one another.

• Teachers can also assign tasks such as presentations and projects to students, which they need to perform in groups.

• Also, emphasis should be laid in teaching students to incorporate ideas and experiences into discussion.

• Along with good communication, it is important to improve non-verbal behavior eye contact, facial expression, gestures etc.

Benefits of Open Communication in the Classroom

• A teacher can ask thought provoking questions to students and encourage them to articulate and reflect on their thinking. It will improve their reasoning power and make them a logical thinker.

• Novel communication methods can help in change or breaking up monotony in class. It makes classroom environment more lively and interesting.

• Frequent dialogues helps teacher to know personality traits of each student, whether student is extrovert and introvert.

• Open communication makes academic goals more realistic and achievable.

• Communication in classroom fetches constructive feedback which can be used in developing and enhancing student-teacher bond.

Positive Reinforcement through Communication

• If a student does good work, a teacher must convey through his words appreciation and praise for the student. It will further boost his confidence.

• Highlighting positive behavior of the student helps but the teacher at any cost must avoid comparisons between students.
